When Uzi Dayan is asked if he is not too old to compete in the upcoming Likud primaries, he describes his agenda for the past week.

It is hard to believe that he is 74 years old, a father of three who wants to be a member of the Knesset again, a little over a year after he finished his last term in the 23rd Knesset.

Dayan was a general in the IDF and served as deputy chief of staff and head of the National Security Council.

Now, he wants to once again influence the decision-making process in the country from the 25th Knesset.

"It's never too late. I have a hunger to do things and promote the ideas I believe in. Many in the political world have no experience. They haven't plowed a furrow, built a house, taught a class or managed a company. You can trust me in light of what I've done and can do as well in the future in the political arena," he said.

Dayan is the grandson of Knesset member Shmuel Dayan, nephew of Shmuel Dayan and cousin of Yael Dayan, Assi Dayan and Yonatan Gefen.

This week he was almost reappointed as a member of the Knesset on behalf of the Likud after Gadi Ybarken resigned from the 25th Knesset to make it easier for him to compete in the primaries, and the next one after him - Tali Ploskov considered giving up the position during the election period, she finally decided to serve as a member of the Knesset, and Dayan will try his luck again in the party's primaries .

"The Knesset has been an unhappy place in recent years," says Dayan.

"In the last year, the problem in which the coalition oppressed us as the opposition was also added to this, but we must do the best and it is up to us. There is definitely room and it is necessary to change the nature of the Knesset and the behavior in it, and I definitely see myself as a person who can restore the Knesset's dignity."

"We will have to decide whether to topple the Hamas government"

Dayan's fight, he claims, is intended, among other things, to deal with real problems that the State of Israel is facing.

"Our basic and strategic security situation is very good, but there are things that are really put to the test for the next government that will be formed in Israel."

According to him, "The next government will have to decide how to stop the Iranian nuclear process, this requires us to take political as well as military steps, but we will also have to decide whether to enter Gaza and topple the Hamas regime."

In addition to this, Dayan said that "we need to make sure that Israeli Arabs are loyal to the state and law-abiding, otherwise we could be in a state of civil war. A kind of anti-Semitism is developing among Israeli Arabs, and some of them practice anti-Semitic methods and terrorism. We need to stop this because they need to know If it continues in this state, it will end in Nakba 2."

Dayan even claimed in an interview with Walla!

That a commission of inquiry should be established to look into the case of pimping the prison guards, but he added that an "unequivocal and immediate order to remove all women from men's prisons and all men from women's prisons" should be given.

The latest evidence about the conduct of the prosecutor's office and the police is "very scary", in his words.

"This causes damage to democracy and the rule of law and causes public mistrust. A very thorough reform is required there. We must change the method of electing judges, split the role of the ombudsman and enact the superseding clause.

Public trust is critical and we must restore it."

Dayan dynasty

Uzi Dayan's grandfather was Shmuel Dayan, one of the symbols of the second aliyah, he was a worker in the old settlements until he, together with other friends, founded the first workers' camp in Nahalel.

Along with David Ben-Gurion, he was one of the founders of Mapai, and served on its behalf in the Knesset in the first decade as one of the representatives of the prominent members of the working settlement. Dayan's retirement did not leave the Knesset without a representative from the family, as his son, Chief of Staff Moshe Dayan, was less loyal. to the party and even resigned from it twice: the first time in favor of establishing a coalition with Ben-Gurion and in the 1970s for membership in the Begin government.

Dayan's death in 1981 put an end to 31 consecutive years of representation from the Dayan family in the Knesset, but a little more than ten years later, in July 1992, the third generation representative of the family, MK Yael Dayan, was sworn in as a member of the Knesset. While the previous generations were at the center of the mainstream of the Labor Party, and dealt with matters of security, peace and settlement - Yael Dayan, who was also sworn in on behalf of the party, dealt with women's and LGBT rights and was the initiator of the law to prevent sexual harassment.

Yael finished her term in the Knesset in 2003, but the family did not say the last word.

Another grandson - Uzi emerged from the right side of the political system and served as a member of Knesset on behalf of the Likud in 2019 and between the years 2020-2021.

Now, he will try his luck again and run for a seat in the 25th Knesset.
