Bad Tölz - It is just one of many restaurants that have been closed in Bad Tölz in recent years: the Ratskeller.

Renovation costs are around 600,000 euros.

The Grünerbräu has long been history, the Starnbräu is up for a new lease, the Gasthof Zantl, the Reutbergstüberl and the formerly popular Kolberggarten are closed.

The reasons are the same: high investments would have been necessary to adapt an aging gastronomy to modern requirements.

City council rejects expensive renovation of the Tölzer Ratskeller

The most recent Tölz city council meeting showed why this is the case.

The Ratskeller building, which is owned by the city, would first have to be renovated - costs: around 600,000 euros.

An investment that the city council, with the exception of Julia Dostthaler (CSU), initially rejects.

Instead, alternative uses should be sought, for example in connection with the Alte Madlschule cultural center next door.

The building was part of the then town hall until 1979, three years later an inn was set up in the vaulted rooms - without a cellar, but with a beer garden.

The city had leased the property to the Gaißacher building contractor Jakob Pauli, who had also assumed the costs for the expansion at the time.

The tenant in turn sublet the restaurant.

37 years later, in 2019, Peter Mayerhofer, the last Ratskeller landlord, moved away and the house has been empty ever since.

Jakob Pauli died in 2021, shortly afterwards his partner Anneliese Bichler.

The new tenant of the Ratskeller would have to invest around 350,000 euros

The city would first have to put the Ratskeller in a "licensable state", said city treasurer Hermann Forster.

This means that the rooms have to be prepared in such a way that “a host who goes in can run the restaurant”.

In addition, a new tenant would have to pay around 350,000 euros for expansion work, including a new cooling system, a counter, kitchen equipment, lighting and floors.

“That is a very high amount,” emphasized the chamberlain.

In addition, with a realistic lease of 1,500 euros per month, the expansion costs would not be amortized for the city even after 30 years.

Bad Tölz is fighting against the death of inns

For city councilor Julia Dostthaler (CSU), the city has a role model function in the fight against the death of inns.

You have to counteract the many vacancies in Tölz, she said.

That would also be good for "social events", for example around the Leonhardi ride.

Mayor Ingo Mehner (CSU) rejected the accusation that the city had let the Ratskeller come down: "We only got a ridiculous price for rent, because the tenant did everything at his own expense."

For Christof Botzenhart (CSU), the Ratskeller is "not a vacancy that hurts the cityscape".

This case is different than the post office area or an inn on Marktstraße.

The Starnbräu, which has been closed since the beginning of the Corona pandemic, is currently available for lease there.

Of the traditional restaurants in Tölz, only the Tölzer Bräustüberl in Mühlfeld has so far been reopened on May 1 after renovation and refurbishment.

Whether, as here, potent investors from Lenggries will also be found for the Ratskeller is currently completely open.
