Codename "Montmartre": Internet portals Web.de and GMX are for sale

According to a report, the United Internet group wants to part with the mail services GMX and Web.de.
The division could be valued at around 1.5 billion euros.
Montabaur - The mail services GMX and Web.de, two of the largest online portals in Germany, could change owners in a long time.
The Internet group United Internet has put its division for consumer applications, to which the two mail portals belong, for sale, the
Handelsblatt
reported on Thursday.

The magazine referred to several people familiar with the matter.
The division could therefore be valued at around 1.5 billion euros.
According to the
Handelsblatt
, the project started in the spring under the code name "Montmartre".
United Internet announced that it regularly deals with the strategic development of its business areas and with potential cooperations.
However, no decisions are currently pending regarding changes in the share in Consumer Applications.
The
Handelsblatt
also said that no preliminary decision had been made.
GMX and Web.de have millions of customers in Germany
According to the company, GMX has more than 20 million customers in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, while United Internet estimates the number of Web.de customers at 17 million.
The income comes from advertisers and private customers who not only have a free mail account, but also a version with more storage space.
