A type of cheese made by the Filgertshofer family from the Ziegenhof in Lenggries wins a Bavaria-wide competition.

The "Goat Lady" even takes first place.

Lenggries -

Whether sliced cheese, cream cheese or soft cheese, whether with chili, Italian herbs or wild garlic.

The Filgertshofer family's range of goat's cheese leaves nothing to be desired.

The “Goat Lady” variety was recently honored by Minister of Food Michaela Kaniber at the “Wanted for Bavarian Cheese Treasures” cheese competition.

"We attach great importance to bringing nature into our cheese," explains Leo Filgertshofer, who runs the goat farm in the Lenggrieser district of Winkl together with his wife Elisabeth.

“Our goats only eat hay 365 days a year.

The taste of the plant is preserved in the hay,” the farmer continues.

"We would also like to have that in the milk."

Cheese samples will be sent to Kempten by post

In order to be able to take part in the competition, the Filgertshofers had to send cheese samples by post to Kempten, where the product testing took place.

"We applied with two varieties, the 'Goat Lady' and the 'Precious Goat'," says Elisabeth Filgertshofer.

Sending the cheese alone is a challenge, because it must not arrive in Kempten warmer than ten degrees, explains Leo Filgertshofer.

After careful laboratory testing, a jury evaluates the cheese.

She focuses on the appearance, the smell, the texture and of course the taste.

In the category "Semi-hard cheese" and in the sub-category "Sheep, Goat and Co.", the "Lady Goat" took first place.

"The Goat Lady is a very mild variety, almost like butter cheese," explains Leo Filgertshofer.

The Filgertshofers have been making cheese for 25 years.

In 2019 they built a new cheese dairy, which produced the first cheese the following year.

Every other day, the milk from the 125 goats is processed on the farm.

"We now run the farm full-time," says Leo Filgertshofer, who previously worked as a carpenter.

"We started in the kitchen with a small kettle," he recalls.

"Today we have an 800 liter boiler."

The official award ceremony is in September

The award shows the Filgertshofer family that they are on the right track with their investment in a new cheese dairy.

"We can see that our new cheese dairy was worth it," says Elisabeth Filgertshofer.

"And we are pleased that the appreciation we have for cheese is also being confirmed by others." The official award ceremony will take place on Sunday, September 25th, at the Käse-Genussmarkt in the Bavarian State Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Forestry Munich as part of the farmers' market mile.
