Ghost buses trigger a fundamental debate

District – The district will convert all regional bus lines to be CO2-neutral by 2030.

The resolution found a large majority, but sparked a debate about the district's mobility strategy.

Before the summer break, the district council decided by a vote of 63:4 to gradually convert from diesel to electric or hydrogen drive.

The district had previously developed a concept and obtained an expert opinion, which recommended that electric buses be used in particular.

Because the effort is great and the new tendering of bus routes has to be prepared in a timely manner, the district finances the positions of a project manager and other employees at MVV GmbH.

"External third parties should build up competence at the MVV," said district administrator Christoph Göbel (CSU), their experience should then also help other districts with the changeover.

Ghost buses: Free voters are demanding passenger numbers

The four votes against came from the AFD and from Ottobrunn's mayor Thomas Loderer (CSU).

A lively discussion preceded the decision.

AfD spokeswoman Christina Specht called the change an "ideological hasty shot that endangers mobility" and spoke in this context of a "failed energy policy".

One should stick to combustion engines, because Specht fears competition for public electricity: "We don't expect any bottlenecks in oil, but in electricity." She applied for the AfD group to postpone the decision.

The county government should develop more cost-effective and less disruptive proposals to meet the Clean Vehicles Directive.

Her application was rejected with a score of 64:3.

Günther Heyland called for the number of passengers to be checked for the Free Voters.

The district spends a lot of money to find innovative ways: “The free voters welcome the proposed resolution.

But I keep hearing about ghost buses," it said. These are subjective impressions.

But one should check the effectiveness of the buses and inform the citizens whether all bus routes are necessary.

"Please urge MVV to provide us with figures."

District Administrator: Build more demand with good supply

District Administrator Göbel (CSU) replied: "We have opted for supply-oriented planning." The strategy is to build more demand with a good supply.

Where this does not work, the district wants to introduce the "on-demand" model, in which transport requests in a community are met in a targeted manner.

Büchler: "What counts is the beat"

Markus Büchler (Greens) appealed: "It doesn't make sense to put pressure on now.

We have to keep investing and stay calm.” The district council had decided on a counting system, “but that can only provide information retrospectively”, and these were consumed due to the pandemic and the 9-euro ticket: “What counts for passengers to ride is the beat."
