The Hama Agriculture Directorate estimated the governorate's production of figs during the current season at 7844 tons, distributed over 7451 tons for the rainfed fig crop and 393 tons for the irrigated.
The assistant director of agriculture, Dr. Sattam Al-Khalil, explained to SANA reporter that fig cultivation spreads in most villages and towns of the governorate, especially in the Masyaf area, as it is mountainous and has moist soil and a cold climate. Therefore, its production is close to half of the governorate’s production, indicating that the number of fig trees in the governorate is about 664,000 trees. Of which 537,000 are fruitful trees.
The farmer, Muhammad Al-Jumaili, pointed out that the fig tree enjoys abundant production, but the marketing process for it is difficult because there is no public authority that wants to buy it, but it is put in the local market and is subject to the balance of supply and demand, which determines the price, as its prices differ from one region to another, calling for the need for the existence of markets for the disposal of the product and the establishment of Factories, whether in the public or private sector, benefit from high production quantities.
The white Sedawi, Shiblawi, Malaki and Sultani fig varieties are the most prevalent in Hama Governorate.
