The situation in the morning - The viral riot reaches the street

2022-08-06T05:13:18.712Z

When a dignified life becomes unaffordable. It speaks the man with whom everything can get worse. And: Train the mask rules. This is the situation on Saturday morning.

From the grid to the street

This week's morning briefing began with a small contribution to German politicians' fear of the Germans, the fear of an uprising by people in need, at the latest in autumn or winter, when the increased prices are even more noticeable.

Now there is a suitable date: In some German cities, people from the #IBinArmutbetreff campaign will be demonstrating today, for example in Hamburg, Munich and Berlin.

So far, the protest has taken place on Twitter under this hashtag.

People who can no longer afford a dignified life report on their misery.

There is already talk of a viral uprising of the poor.

Not every protest is an uprising, but it is definitely a test of mood today.

  • Should our last hope be that our parents die young?

You can find news and background information on the war in Ukraine here:

  • Attack on nuclear power plants, Zelenskyj speaks of an "act of terrorism" - that happened at night:

After the attack on the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant, President Zelenskyj calls for sanctions against Russia's nuclear industry.

And: The USA is apparently planning another aid package with a volume of one billion dollars.

    The overview.

  • Can Ukraine fire back from residential areas?:

Amnesty International accuses the Ukrainian military of endangering civilians when it is not necessary.

    Experts criticize the report.

In fact, Kyiv faces difficult decisions every day, as SPIEGEL research shows.

  • What really happened in the Olenivka prison camp?:

The Kremlin denies access to the site where 50 Ukrainian prisoners of war died - fueling suspicions of a massacre.

Relatives also attack the International Committee of the Red Cross.

    Why many questions remain unanswered.

Trump speaks

Conversations about the state of the world are currently taking a similar course in liberal circles.

Reality is painted in dark colors, talks about the war in Ukraine, about Corona, about the climate catastrophe, recently people have even been shouting »Taiwan!«.

Foreheads are wrinkled, worry lines run through the faces.

But the low point has not yet been reached.

The low point begins with "If then..." And everyone knows.

Oh God, someone sighs.

"On the first Tuesday in November 2024 ... Not that," moans another.

"...Donald Trump..."

From then on the conversation is practically over, everyone sinks into silent gloom.

He is the specter of world politics.

The man with whom things could get a lot worse than they already are if he were re-elected President of the United States in a little over two years (although in some non-liberal circles he is seen as the savior).

Trump is speaking at the Conservative Political Action Conference in Dallas this weekend.

  • Does it make sense to impeach Donald Trump?

The mask test

Are you already cramming for fall?

Do you know when to fit snow tires and when to fit snow chains?

The federal government thought it was a good idea to give these names to the corona phases of the dark season, winter tire time and snow chain time.

Isn't that too stupid, too childish for this serious matter?

And can you tell under what conditions you should wear a mask, when and where?

In the restaurant on the way to the toilet if you have not received the Xth vaccination.

But with which vaccine?

And when was it given to you?

Three months plus one day could lead to an administrative offense.

And does the same rule apply for the way back from the toilet as for the way there?

And is that even possible?

A vaccine that is only effective for three months is being distributed?

Does that mean that in future I will be getting vaccinations more often than going to the dentist?

And could I perhaps have the authorities coordinate the quarterly sales tax return with the tax office with my respective vaccination dates so that I don't have to remember so much data?

For now, I'll continue to memorize the rules for wearing a mask.

  • How the traffic light is now arguing about the vaccination option

Here's the current quiz of the day

The starting question today: Which of these three songs did Angela Merkel not want for the Great Tattoo to say goodbye to?

Winner of the day...

... is Goethe.

That's right, yesterday he was the loser of the day because his »Faust« will soon no longer be required reading at Bavarian high schools (those in other federal states have not for a long time).

But then I got this email from Alexander Kozel, mayor of the town of Knittlingen in Baden-Württemberg, which I had never known before:

'If there's interest in Faust.

A small Swabian village does not stop letting the myth of Faust live.

The Faust town of Knittlingen has a unique Faust museum.

Latest achievement: Experience the story with VR as Faust.«

Virtually everyone can now be Faust and make a pact with the devil.

Splendid.

  • Help, my daughter is smarter than me:

At two years old, Margret Thiem's daughter spoke like an adult, at nine she quotes Goethe.

Here the mother tells of her life with a gifted child - which many consider strange.

The latest news from the night

  • US conspiracy theorists sentenced to another $45.2 million:

A jury in Texas has sentenced Alex Jones to the equivalent of $44.3 million in so-called punitive damages for false allegations about a school massacre that killed 26 people.

  • Militant Palestinians fire more than 100 rockets at Israel:

Israel kills a Palestinian militia leader, the extremists respond with massive rocket fire at Israel.

Secretary of Defense Gantz has mobilized thousands of reservists.

  • Pension contributions are to be fully deductible in future:

The federal government is eliminating double taxation of pensions: Expenses can be fully taken into account as special expenses from next year.

Pensions are only taxed when they are paid out.

The SPIEGEL + recommendations for today

  • How Putin's war changed my Moscow:

SPIEGEL correspondent Christian Esch has been living in the Russian capital for 14 years.

Now he hardly recognizes even acquaintances.

Why do so many people support the war?

  • So much China is in a German Audi:

German car companies want to bring back the most important parts of production - because of Corona, war and climate change.

    But is self-sufficiency even possible?

SPIEGEL took a look inside an Audi E-tron with its 6000 parts.

  • Emerged from ruins:

Janine Wissler does not manage to keep the left together.

More and more officials and members are leaving the party.

Only one, whose resignation many long for, cannot be shaken off: Sahra Wagenknecht.

  • Should the West cooperate with the Taliban, Mr. Karzai?

He is not allowed to leave the country, DER SPIEGEL met him in his private office in Kabul: former head of state Hamid Karzai on the return of terror, the ban on education for women - and the fear for his children.

  • "What's wrong with you?":

Violence broke out between security guards and students at the University of the Arts.

It was about the bar operation, the end of a celebration - and about unisex toilets, which were again sorted by men and women.

  • Why I love Beyoncé:

Her voice is like a cat purring, I watched her documentary at the lowest point in my life until I could get up again.

She influenced me in important life decisions: Beyoncé is my biggest idol.

I wish you a good start into the day.

Yours, Dirk Kurbjuweit
