Against the background of the security situation, Prime Minister Yair Lapid invited opposition leader Binyamin Netanyahu for a security update tomorrow (Sunday), in the presence of the Prime Minister's military secretary Major General Avi Gil.
To date, Netanyahu has refused to attend the official update talks that the Prime Minister is obligated to give to the opposition leader, since he did not want to be portrayed as receiving briefings from Lapid or Bennett. Netanyahu previously suggested that the briefings be conducted by Major General Gil only, without the presence of the Prime Minister, "so as not to turn them upside down for a political event." Bennett's office and Lapid's office refused this, and therefore the update meetings did not take place until today.
The current situation, in which Israel is in the midst of a military conflict, may make it more difficult for Netanyahu to refuse the invitation, and it is likely that Lapid knows this and is trying to embarrass the leader of the opposition. If Netanyahu refuses the invitation, he will be seen as putting political and ego considerations before Israel's national security considerations. And if he gives in to it, he will be seen (in his view) as someone who "makes a pilgrimage" to Lapid to receive guidance from him, thus strengthening the status and image of his political opponent.
Netanyahu's office has yet to say whether the opposition leader intends to accept the invitation.
