In the shadow of reports of a cease-fire: heavy barrages into the Gaza Strip (Walla system)

After the Egyptian mediation efforts, the ceasefire against the Islamic Jihad went into effect tonight (Sunday) towards the end of Operation Dawn.

However, security officials warned that the shooting could continue even after it started.

Therefore, military sources said that the IDF was preparing for continued launches during the night and for a response. Minutes before the cease-fire came into effect, the launches continued towards the settlements in the south and surrounding Gaza. At the same time, aircraft attacked targets of the Islamic Jihad in the Gaza Strip.

"The State of Israel thanks Egypt for its efforts," reads the announcement of the National Information System. "If the ceasefire is violated, the State of Israel reserves the right to respond forcefully.

We will not allow any factor to violate the daily routine of the residents of the State of Israel."

Even before the Egyptian mediators were able to reach agreements on a ceasefire with the representatives of the Islamic Jihad, intensive talks were held.

At the beginning of the evening it was reported that an agreement had been reached that a ceasefire would begin at 20:00, but very quickly the terrorist organization denied this, and conditioned its agreement on the guarantees of the Egyptians to respond to its demands.

Among other things, the Jihad demanded that the "Israeli aggression" be stopped and the release of the arrested officials, Bassem al-Saadi and Khalil Awawada.

In Egypt they promised that they would work for the release of the two.

After the terrorist organization received the promises, it announced that the ceasefire would go into effect at 11:30 p.m.

In the meantime, Prime Minister Yair Lapid visited today with Defense Minister Benny Gantz the settlements in the south and surrounding Gaza.

In a conversation with the heads of the authorities, Lapid said that "we will help the growth of the envelope".

According to sources in the conversation, the prime minister did not talk about the operation and the security situation, but mainly about strengthening the authorities and the residents.

Despite the announcement of a ceasefire, some residents of Sderot are still divided on whether they are indeed interested in the move.

"We have to continue the fighting," said Albert Gabbay, a resident of the city.

"The cease-fire is not good for us because we return to the same situation within a month or two. There is no deterrence, Hamas is the sovereign - we need to hit them too. We are hostages and will remain so for many years to come."

On the other hand, Shimon Elkhart, also a resident of the city of Sderot, actually expressed his support for a ceasefire against the Islamic Jihad.

We need to go to a ceasefire and prevent another week of children in shelters in the Gaza Strip."
