Attacks: despite the lull, Islamism still threatens

This is the conclusion that can be drawn from reading the recent report by Europol, the European criminal police agency, on the terrorist threat in the Union in 2021. The good news is the significant decline, all ideologies combined (from Islamism to the ultra-right, including the ultra-left and separatists), in the number of attack



Good news, but a reality marked by a persistent Islamist threat.

This is the conclusion that can be drawn from reading the recent report by Europol, the European criminal police agency, on the terrorist threat in the Union in 2021.

The good news is the significant decline, all ideologies combined (from Islamism to the ultra-right, including the ultra-left and separatists), in the number of attacks and attempted attacks foiled or failed in the European Union.

That is 15 attacks or projects in 2021 against 57 in 2020 and 55 in 2019. But these statistics underline at the same time that the Islamist movement is still the most dangerous in Europe.

The drop in 2021 is indeed explained by the collapse in the number of attacks and plans for attacks by far-left or pro-independence groups.

And by maintaining it at a very low level, even if Europol says it is concerned about a rise in power of these movements, far-right terrorist projects...
