Gröbenzell – A “still young jumper” is what Dr.

Sven Deppisch from the historical association "Die Gröbenkeepers" the municipality of Gröbenzell.

And even if 70 years is a proud age, in contrast to its neighbors, the community actually passes for almost as young.

Nevertheless, on the occasion of the milestone birthday, we can now look back on an eventful history.

On August 1, 1952, Gröbenzell was raised to the status of a municipality and this event was now celebrated 70 years later to the day in the new town hall with representatives of the neighboring towns and municipalities.

On the occasion of the milestone birthday, Martin Schäfer, who has held the office of mayor since 2014, praised everything that has been achieved in the last 70 years in his speech.

However, Schäfer is also very reflective - especially in view of the current economic situation.

"These are difficult times," the mayor sums up in relation to the consequences of the pandemic, the energy crisis and all the problems that are currently affecting the citizens of his community.

But Schäfer also finds positive words in these uncertain times: "We are a strong community when it comes down to

the Gröbenzellers stand together.” As a goal for the future, the community should above all remain an attractive and livable place to live for everyone.

“No matter what the next few years bring, we are up to the challenges,” he explains.

Deppisch takes guests on a journey through the years

According to Schäfer, Dr.

Sven Deppisch took the guests on a journey through the years in his presentation.

On this historical journey, it quickly becomes clear that Gröbenzell has passed through many different stations in recent years.

Deppisch reports on the great construction boom between 1970 and 1980 under the then mayor Eicke Götz.

During this time, many major construction projects were implemented and the first full-time mayor campaigned for an improvement in infrastructure and a relaxation of the then tense traffic situation thanks to projects such as the railway underpass in Freyastraße.

These improvements further increased the attractiveness of the community.

This is also reflected in the number of inhabitants, which climbed from 6,821 (1960) to 11,919 (1970).

In 2022, the number will have settled at around 19,700.

However, Gröbenzell remains one of the most densely populated communities in Germany.

Groebenzell remains Groebenzell

In 2011, the possibility of Gröbenzell changing from a garden-town suburb to a proper town was debated, but a majority of eligible voters voted against it in a referendum.

"A small settlement became an up-and-coming community that retained its stubbornness, Gröbenzell should remain Gröbenzell," Deppisch comments on the decision at the time.

Nevertheless, the garden city went through many changes, such as the development of a commercial area, the award as a fair trade community and other major construction projects.

"The municipality has changed over the last 70 years and cannot and will not block itself from change in the future," concludes Schäfer.
