How to install your clip-on floating parquet?

You have three floating laying techniques, although it is customary to lay the floorboards in the direction of the light or in the extension of the entrance.

  • Horizontal floating installation:

    ideal in a small room.

Laying the boards across the width allows you to visually enlarge your room.

  • Vertical:

laying in the length is often used to give a feeling of depth to the room.

  • Diagonal (at 45 degrees):

a choice that gives style and originality to your room.

How to start a laying of floating parquet?

It is possible to install a floating floor on an old covering such as tiles, vinyl flooring or even on a heated floor.

However, avoid placing it on a carpet: it requires a perfectly flat, dry and clean floor.

Before you start, it is advisable to store your boards in the room at least two days in advance, so that the wood adapts to the ambient temperature and does not deform when laying.

Also remember to unhinge your door to facilitate installation.

    1- Prepare

    laying your floating floor

Install all the hardware within easy reach:

    • a tape measure, a square, a ruler and a pencil

    • floorboards

    • underlay (or resilient strips) and tape

    • 8mm spacers (wood expands naturally)

    • a mallet (avoid the hammer)

    • fine grit sandpaper

    • a profile copier (optional)

You can also bring knee pads and gloves.

Once the floor has been cleaned, lay the underlay flush with the walls, perpendicular to the direction of laying the boards and tape the strips together.

This will protect your floor and provide sound insulation

    2- Lay the floorboards

Start by laying the parquet in a corner of the room, groove facing you to easily assemble the boards together.

Start by installing the expansion wedges approximately every 50 cm along the wall all around the room to leave an expansion joint.

Then, lay the first row of slats along the wall: clip the slats into each other, tilting them at an angle of approximately 30 degrees to fit them more easily.

    Use the mallet if necessary.

At the end of the day, if you don't have the space to put an entire plank, measure the distance (thinking about deducting the expansion wedge that will be used to store) and cut a parquet plank to the right size, ideally using a jigsaw.

    Sand it to remove irregularities.

If the rest of the cut plank is at least 30 cm long, use it to start the second row.

Otherwise, use a half board for a staggered installation.

Clip it to the first plank of the first row.

For the following planks, always start by clipping them along the length of the planks of the first row before fitting them with the previous plank of the same row.

The third row will start with a full plank, the fourth a half plank and so on.

    3- Make the particular cutouts

In some places, you will certainly have to make special cuts:

    • around plumbing pipes,

    • in a corner of the room,

    • for the last row of slats,

    • at the level of the door: you may have to saw off the frame of the door to be able to embed the floating parquet without any problem without creating an unsightly hole in the continuity.

To make these particular cuts, use a profile copier, or a tape measure and square for a straight line and a jigsaw.

    Consider sanding.

Don't forget to fit the spacers when taking your measurements.

    4- Make the finishes

Your parquet is laid, but you still have a few finishing touches to do.

To ensure an aesthetic finish between two rooms with different coatings, consider installing a threshold bar.

You may also need to plane the bottom of the door a little so that it closes perfectly once the laminate flooring is installed.

How much does laminate flooring cost?

If you wish to have your floating floor installed by a professional, be aware that the

    prices vary

    according to your request.

In addition to the price of the floating floor itself, it will be necessary to plan for certain additional expenses:
