Opinion Victory over zero: sooner or later the fire will be renewed Israel today

2022-08-07T20:55:20.615Z

The Islamic Jihad lost its two senior commanders in the Gaza Strip - Taysir Jabari and Khaled Mansour - as well as many assets in the field of production and storage of ammunition, headquarters and outposts. Israel and East Jerusalem and the northern arena - who left him alone in the campaign

A combination of circumstances led to the fact that the round of fighting that is on the verge of ending was the most successful that Israel has ever conducted in Gaza.

The Islamic Jihad suffered an unprecedentedly heavy blow, while Israel ended the round with no casualties and only marginal damage.

To borrow from the language of football, it was a victory over zero.

The Islamic Jihad lost its two senior commanders in the Gaza Strip - Taysir Jabari and Khaled Mansour - as well as many assets in the field of the production and storage of ammunition, headquarters and outposts. On the other hand, the organization was unable to cause serious damage to Israel, nor was it able to drag Hamas into combat , the Arabs of Israel and East Jerusalem and the northern arena, who left him alone in the campaign.

Quality intelligence

There are quite a few reasons for this extraordinary achievement: the first and foremost of which is the high-quality intelligence provided by the Shin Bet, which enabled the two assassinations that decided the campaign. It is rare that such intelligence is obtained regarding terrorist commanders who have lived for years as wanted, and are aware of the dangers around them; it is even rarer that this happens during Tensions - and during the fighting itself.

When the head of the Shin Bet last Thursday presented to the political level (which he approved) an operational opportunity to attack Jabari, he reversed the trend: Israel went from defensive to offensive. The intelligence provided regarding Mansur was already the knockout, after which it was clear that unless an unusual event occurred - The round was decided. From here, it was only a matter of time until the Egyptians formulated the cease-fire, which Israel wanted after all its objectives in the operation had been achieved.

Hamas - out of the campaign

One of these goals was to leave Hamas out of the campaign.

It seems that the largest organization in the Strip, and its sovereign, did not want to pay a price (military, economic, civil) for the madness of the Islamic Jihad, which started in the first place because of an arrest in Samaria.

It is also possible that he had an interest for Israel to take care of this constant headache for him, although the matter will be examined in the future: in the intra-Gaza response of Hamas to the next rocket or shooting by Islamic Jihad operatives.

In other words, Israel gave Hamas an opportunity to deepen its grip on the Strip, and to curb the small and extreme organization from it.

Another goal is the separation of sectors between the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.

Following the beatings he suffered in Gaza, the Jihad should think a thousand times in the future if he wants to disable the wrap for every arrest in the West Bank.

This is a lesson that should also be passed on to Hamas, which is also trying to mix up the sects.

The fact that the interior remained quiet and the Temple Mount did not cause riots either - despite yesterday's mass immigration - was a significant success, which should deter Hamas in the future.

Exact activity

The precise activity of the Air Force and the Southern Command also contributed to the success of the operation.

Such operations, in a small and dense area like Gaza, can easily get complicated due to tactical mistakes.

The fact that all the injuries were surgical, and the number of non-involved victims was small, helped to leave Hamas out of the campaign and reduced international criticism of Israel.

Also the fact that the Palestinian civilian victims were the result of a failed rocket fire launched by the Jihad helped sharpen the Israeli message that there are those who fight terrorism, and those who act against civilians - in Israel and in the Strip.

And four more points: the political echelon that managed to act in complete synchronization and without tension between itself and between itself and the security echelons, and sweep away all the nonsense about its incompetence to make security decisions;

the responsible civil behavior, which prevented unnecessary casualties in the home front;

The advocacy that operated efficiently and quickly, and managed to maximize achievements and neutralize mines;

And the Egyptian mediation that proved to be effective again.

The test of time will tell

As always, the achievements of the operation will be tested in the future.

Even to the extent and duration of the deterrence on the Islamic Jihad and Hamas, also in the speed with which the Jihad will be able to recover, both in intra-Gaza restraint and in the ability to preserve the separation of the sectors.

But in the bottom line, anyone who thinks that something fundamental, fundamental, has changed in Gaza in the last few days, is going to be deluded.

Even if it will be quiet, more or less temporary, without deep root solutions - sooner or later the fire will be renewed.
