Lots of lightning and dangerous thunderstorm cells: The organizers of the Echinger Brass Wiesn had to interrupt the event on Friday.
Eching
– The “Brass Wiesn” found a sudden interruption late on Friday evening.
The announced thunderstorms did not leave Eching out and also moved over the festival area.
"Due to the risk of severe weather and the high lightning activity of the thunderstorm cells, the festival management decided shortly after 11 p.m., in consultation with meteorologists and those responsible for the aid organizations, to cancel the event to protect visitors," reports the district fire inspection.
According to BRK operations manager Rainer Irlbauer, the 12,500 Brass Wiesn fans who were on the site at the time were absolutely understanding and marched to their cars, mobile homes - or the S-Bahn.
The Waagstraße was specially closed to ensure that visitors could leave the festival site safely.
Forecast: squalls and heavy hail
The development of some dangerous thunderstorm cells had been on the radar all evening, reports Rainer Irlbauer.
After wind gusts of up to 100 km/h and heavy hailstorms were predicted for Eching in some weather models, it was decided to pull the ripcord.
"Together with the Echinger fire brigade, we opened two gymnasiums," reports the BRK operations manager, as well as an underground car park where festival visitors could have found shelter in an emergency".
Thank God it didn't come to that.
Eching was spared the hail, it continued with heavy downpours.

The Echinger fire brigade also opened an underground car park, which was then not needed as a refuge.

Of course, the effort beforehand had been enormous.
The Erding control center had alerted various rapid response groups of the BRK Freising and Erding in accordance with the previously defined alarm plan for the Brass Wiesn, as well as the Eching fire brigade, the district fire inspection and the support group of the local operations center (UG ÖEL) South.
At two o'clock in the morning the alarm was over
After the festival grounds had been cleared and the thunderstorms had passed, the operation ended at around 2 a.m.
According to the district fire inspection, the cooperation between the fire brigade, BRK, THW, all other aid organizations and the police worked “excellently”.
