It is likely that today the testimony of a ghost would not be accepted in court, but 125 years ago such testimony was not only accepted - but also led to the conviction of the accused for murder.

This was the first and only time that a ghost's testimony had allegedly resulted in a conviction.

Then meet the accused by his full name, Erasmus 'Edward' Stribling Trout Shaw.

The guy was sentenced to prison in 1897 for murdering his wife whore Easter Shaw (yes, that's her name. Poor thing).

On the morning of January 23, 1897, the body of the woman in her 20s was found lying on the steps of her home by an errand boy, who rushed to call for help.

Until the coroner, Dr. George Knapp, arrived on the scene, Edward - her husband - who played her completely innocent, lifted his wife to their shared bed, dressed her in a robe that reached to her neck and waited there for the medical examination.

The coroner who arrived on the scene tried to examine her body, But Edward became so hysterical that he had to stop in the middle of the examination and determine that the woman had died of natural causes.

An open casket funeral was held for Easter and her loved ones, where Edward acted similarly.

He covered her neck, this time with a scarf, and reacted so hysterically that her relatives were unable to approach her.

People assumed it was an intense display of grief and gave up.

Easter was buried at Soule Chapel Methodist Cemetery the next day and everyone moved on with their lives.

No one suspected a thing, except for Easter's mother, Mary Jane, who always had a bad feeling about Edward, but didn't understand why.

Not knowing what else to do, she prayed that the truth would come out - and it happened in a way she didn't expect.

According to the devoted mother, her daughter's spirit appeared before her and began to pour out to her the story of the abuse she suffered at the hands of Edward.

She even revealed to her the cause of her death: an argument during dinner led to Edward strangling her and breaking her wrist.

According to Mary Jane, the ghost apparently also managed to turn her head back - thus proving her injury.

Later that evening, Mary begged for the case to be reopened - and prosecutor John Preston agreed.

The investigative team recovered Easter's body, only to discover that her neck was marked and broken.

Her official cause of death was changed on February 22, 1897 to lack of oxygen as a result of manual suffocation.

Investigators discovered that Easter's neck was broken at the first joint, known as the C1 Atlas and C2 Axis, exactly where the ghost claimed.

Moreover, after the investigators did a little digging into Edward's background, they discovered that he had a history of violence and another woman who had died in the past under mysterious circumstances.

Edward was called to trial and Mary testified against him, where she recounted her interaction with Easter's spirit.

Mary recounted the encounter, as recorded in the West Virginia State Archives: "She told me her neck was broken at the first joint and that's exactly what happened."

When asked if she was sure that she had really seen Easter and that it was not a dream, Mary said: "Yes, sir, I saw her. I described to them the dress in which she was killed, and when she was about to leave me - she turned her head completely and looked at me as if she wanted me to know everything . She told me everything."

The jury believed the mother's testimony, found Edward guilty and convicted him of murder.

An enraged mob tried to lynch him and hang him, but they were stopped by the local sheriff and Edward was imprisoned and died in prison three years later as a result of an illness.
