Another city in Bavaria is taking numerous measures to save gas and electricity.

According to the third mayor, there is also a "consequential" one.

Würzburg - "Würzburg saves electricity and gas" - this is the title of the Lower Franconian city's press release of Friday, August 5th.

Accordingly, the city, the Catholic churches and the Bavarian Palaces and Lakes Administration are taking "measures to save gas and electricity now."

From Monday (August 8), lights in the cityscape that are not relevant to safety will be switched off "until further notice".

The same applies to pumping wells where fish do not live.

The city of Würzburg will also close swimming pools.

Würzburg saves electricity and gas: "Unfortunately, measures are already necessary"

"Unfortunately, the measures are already necessary and we are following other cities such as Nuremberg or Munich," Mayor Christian Schuchardt is quoted as saying in the statement.

“We cannot look into the future and do not know how much gas will be delivered in the next few months leading up to winter.

But we all have to be clear: without foreign gas deliveries, the national gas storage facilities, which also have to be used to supply town and country, would be empty within two to two and a half months, depending on the severity of the next winter,” Schuchardt makes clear.

In order to get through the winter with the gas reserves and against the background of unpredictable delivery quantities, as much gas as possible should be saved right now.

Würzburg saves gas and electricity - the measures in detail

“The potentially most energy-saving measures start with lighting, room heating and PCs.

According to statistical surveys, lighting draws the largest amounts of electricity in administrative buildings.

Even one hour less basic lighting at the workplace of municipal administration employees can save up to 45,000 kWh/a of electricity,” the city reports.

This corresponds to the annual consumption of around 15 two-person households.

Municipal employees should work in daylight as far as possible, and the few air conditioning systems in the town hall should not be operated as far as possible.

Further measures provide for the early, further replacement of previous traffic light bulbs with economical LED lights.

Save electricity: the city of Würzburg lights up fewer facades

Facades in the city are no longer illuminated.

The measures affected include:

  • City Hall: Illumination of the Red Building / Coat of Arms Hall

  • Rathaus: Wallwasher Rathausinnenhof

  • Old Main Bridge: Arches

  • Marienberg Fortress.

In this regard, for security reasons, the moat will be closed earlier depending on the sunset.

  • Church buildings: facade Neumünster

  • Church buildings: facade Käppele

  • Fountain at Sternplatz

  • Weir bridge at the Speierloch

The city of Würzburg has published a complete list on its website.

However, there are exceptions "which are based on security aspects," it says.

The facade of the Residenz (Residenzplatz is also illuminated from here), the cathedral (also illuminated in front of the cathedral and Kiliansplatz) and the Marienkapelle remain illuminated.

Gas crisis 2022: tips for saving

Saving gas and electricity: Hardly any more bubbling fountains in Würzburg

“In future there will be almost no more bubbling fountains in the cityscape of Würzburg.

For reasons of economy, only the two large ones, the Kiliansbrunnen at the main station and the four-tube fountain at the Grafeneckart, will carry water," the city announced in detail.

Well pumps that ensure the oxygen supply for fish continue to run.

These are: Pleicher See, Erthal Fountain - Schönbornbrunnen - Burkarder See - Klein-Nizza and Japangarten LGS site 1990.

Gas crisis: the city of Würzburg closes three swimming pools

Three swimming pools are closing as a measure: The Franz-Oberthür-Bad will close after August 12th "and the Sandermare, which has only been available for club and school swimming since spring 2020 due to structural difficulties, will also go offline in mid-August .

The Nordbad is already in holiday mode, an opening must be discussed with the district in autumn," said the city.

Incidentally, after the chlorine has been broken down, the water from the drained Nordbad is available to the Gardens Department for watering the trees, it is at least 400 m³ - a procedure that also took place in Nuremberg.

This means that public swimming in Würzburg will initially continue to be possible in the Nautiland, Dallenberg and Wolfgang Adami baths.

Saving gas and electricity: "I know that this is a momentous measure"

“The continuation of the swimming courses will continue to be ensured, there is a lot of catching up to do there due to the two Corona years.

This is extremely important to me,” emphasizes the third mayor, Judith Jörg.

The prioritization also provides for inclusion, rehabilitation and health swimming to be offered, and competitive sports for Würzburg must also be maintained as a federal swimming base.

“Unfortunately, we have to take baths off the grid.

I know that this is a momentous measure," said Jörg.

"But we all have to save gas now so that we can get through the winter."
