The CDU demands the fastest possible removal of "unwanted" graffiti in Hamburg.

What costs are to be expected and how the Senate is dealing with them.

Hamburg – For some it is art, for others just a mess.

Graffiti has been part of the cityscape of the Hanseatic City of Hamburg for decades.

They have often been the trigger for communal disputes.

The graffiti are a thorn in the side of one party in particular: the CDU.

If it is up to the party around Christoph Ploß, who recently spoke out in favor of the expansion of nuclear power in times of the energy crisis and climate change, Hamburg's buildings should be "cleaned up" as quickly as possible.

That doesn't always have anything to do with art, says CDU MP Anke Frieling.

The graffiti in Hamburg should therefore go, reports 24hamburg.de - but what are the costs to be expected?

Graffiti in Hamburg: Hamburg-Nord alone had to pay tens of thousands of euros in 2021

As the NDR reports, the Hamburg CDU contacted the Senate a few days ago in the person of Anke Frieling.

She demanded answers in relation to a topic that parts of politics had long identified as a city problem.

All graffiti in Hamburg should be removed as quickly as possible - at least the "unwanted" ones.

Only those who have previously been commissioned are welcome.

How expensive has graffiti removal been in Hamburg lately?

The Senate provides answers.

In 2021, around 28,000 euros were spent in Hamburg-Nord, in 2022 around 17,000 euros were already due in Hamburg-Mitte.

These are the two districts that had to pay the most for graffiti removal in Hamburg in the recent past.

St. Pauli, Billstedt, Hamm and Co. are currently in first place when it comes to the number of graffiti that should be removed at political discretion.

Further costs are to be expected in 2022.

The Millerntor Gallery shows that there is also legal and appreciated graffiti in St. Pauli – the international art festival recently celebrated its tenth anniversary.

Graffiti in Hamburg: "It makes a neglected impression" - how the city is fighting against graffiti

Whether on the Hamburger Schanze or at the S-Bahn stations in Hammerbrook or Bergedorf: graffiti makes Hamburg's streets and buildings colorful.

"Sometimes it's about art, sometimes it makes dreary places in the city happier," says CDU politician Anke Frieling.

"But not often," was her statement to those responsible in the Hamburg Senate.

It goes on to say: "It makes a neglected impression."

"Many visitors from Germany and abroad are surprised that graffiti can also be found in the best inner-city locations, since they know the policy of immediately removing sprayed material from their home towns".

Specifically, the politician means the graffiti “on the Landungsbrücken, on the old Elbpark, on the Krugkupplungbrücke, on the Heiligengeistfeld or at the entrance to Planten un Blomen in front of the exhibition halls”.

Many of the buildings mentioned have only recently been renovated or are currently in the process of being renovated.

According to the city, the restoration of the Krugkupplung Bridge would have cost around five million euros.

Refurbishment measures like these are part of the cleanliness offensive "Hamburg - neat and green".

Hamburg should become a "cleaner, more livable city," is how CDU politician Frieling describes the project, which the city is tackling with anti-graffiti coatings on buildings, the increased readiness of security services or the promotion of commissioned graffiti.

Graffiti removal in Hamburg: What are the costs per square meter?

The whole issue of graffiti in Hamburg quickly leads to the question of what actually is “unwanted” or “intended graffiti”.

In the end it's probably a matter of interpretation.

In contrast to the CDU, the red-green Hamburg Senate takes the following view: "The removal of graffiti from buildings is not a question of cleanliness, but of building maintenance and is the responsibility of the respective owners".

However, this should not rule out the possibility that graffiti should be removed “promptly” on “representative buildings”.

For the responsible applicants of the CDU, "promptly" could not be fast enough.

Sometimes high costs could be the reason why "unwanted" graffiti stays on Hamburg's walls a little longer.

It is clear that the costs can vary.

It depends on the affected area and the cleaning method.

In addition, questions about the substrate must be clarified and whether there is a protective coating.

However, as a financial guide, it can be expected that it will cost between 15 and 100 euros per square meter to have graffiti removed.
