CDU General Secretary Mario Czaja has made allegations against SPD leader Lars Klingbeil for dealing with former Chancellor Gerhard Schröder.
"I didn't expect Schröder to be expelled from the SPD," the CDU politician told the Reuters news agency on Monday evening.
The SPD party leadership followed up the matter "only half-heartedly" and did not even submit its own application for expulsion from the party, said Czaja.
The SPD leadership would have hoped that the problem would resolve itself.
"It's not surprising when one of Schröder's pupils leads the SPD," he added.
The arbitration commission of the SPD sub-district Hanover decided on Monday that Schröder should remain in the SPD.
The 78-year-old did not violate the party order, it was said as a reason.
Klingbeil then described Schröder as isolated in the SPD, alluding to his controversial position on Russia.
