The Syrian Commission for Family and Population Affairs, in cooperation with Homs Governorate, held today an introductory workshop on the importance of women’s participation in the local administration elections in Homs Governorate, as part of the “You Can… You Deserve” campaign launched by the commission with the support of a number of ministries and community events.
The deputy head of the authority, Ilham Safi, indicated in a statement to reporters that the workshop aims to raise awareness among women regarding their participation in the local administration elections and to review their successful experiences, whether in the local administration or other administrative centers, to encourage them to participate in the nomination and to increase the representation of women in decision-making positions to achieve service advancement. and development in society.
In turn, the head of the provincial council, Dr. Thaer Khaddour, drew attention to the need for wide participation in this constitutional entitlement, especially by women, for the success of the local administration elections.
For his part, the director of the local councils in the governorate, Mahmoud Mimari, reviewed the administrative structure of the local councils in the governorate, pointing out that there are 131 municipalities in the governorate of Homs, including 15 municipal councils headed by women, in addition to the presence of more than 200 members of the local councils in the governorate, explaining that there are currently nine centers to receive applications for those wishing to run in Homs Governorate, calling for broad participation in local elections as a national duty.
A number of attendees reviewed their experiences and their work process in running for local administration elections and assuming administrative positions in addition to raising their children, noting the importance of conducting these workshops in the countryside to enhance rural women’s awareness and familiarize them with the tasks and powers of the local administration and to encourage nomination and election.
