The mobile phone provider Vodafone has put a new station near the Aueralm into operation.

Good news for hikers and mountain bikers.

Bad Wiessee – Many hikers and mountain bikers may have already noticed it: near the Aueralm in Bad Wiessee, a new mobile phone mast is towering in the alpine terrain.

The communications group Vodafone built the system and put it into operation at the end of 2021.

Now the company explains in a press release: The measure in Bad Wiessee is "part of an important infrastructure program in the German Alps".

In the event of an accident on the mountain in particular, this should guarantee a quick emergency call.

Aim: Closing dead spots and enabling fast emergency calls

By mid-2023, Vodafone intends to implement a total of 115 mobile communications projects in the eight Alpine districts.

The aim is to "close dead spots, bring more capacity and speeds into the network and connect other Alpine communities to the new 5G network for the first time," says the press release.

The location at the Aueralm in Bad Wiessee is also technically prepared so that it will be able to use 5G technology in the future, as a spokesman explains when asked.

At present, GSM and LTE technologies are still used here.

According to Vodafone, the basic mobile accessibility in this area is in the foreground.

So far, this has been difficult due to the lack of mobile radio stations.

5G expansions in other communities as well

Vodafone had already announced in October 2020 that it had put the first 5G mobile radio stations into operation at Tegernsee (we reported).

In Kreuth, Gmund, Tegernsee and Bad Wiessee, the first residents were supplied with 5G mobile broadband technology.

In the meantime, the expansion of the network in the Tegernsee valley and in the Miesbach district has apparently been pushed ahead.

When asked, Vodafone reported that a 5G expansion was carried out in Kreuth between January 1, 2021 and August 1 of this year.

"In Bad Wiessee, there was also a 5G expansion during this same period, and another new LTE construction site was built." In the entire Miesbach district, there were a total of 18 construction projects in the relevant period, including eleven 5G expansions.

By the way: According to Vodafone, the first cell phone station in the Alps went into operation in June 1992.

The group says: "One goal was and still is to create more safety for hikers and mountaineers by introducing the mobile phone emergency call." In the future, the new mobile phone generation 5G should also gradually find its way here.
