China affirmed that the countermeasures it took in response to US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to China's Taiwan region are justified and appropriate.
"The current tensions across the Taiwan Strait are only caused by provocations from the US side," Chinese Defense Ministry spokesman Wu Qian was quoted by Xinhua as saying today, noting that the US side should take full responsibility and face the serious consequences of what it has done.
The spokesman noted that the Chinese side made clear its firm stance on Sino-US relations, relations between the two armies and the Taiwan issue, and repeatedly lodged solemn representations to the US side regarding Pelosi's visit to Taiwan. However, the actions of the US side betrayed its commitments.
Qian said the Chinese side's countermeasures are necessary warnings of US provocations and justified measures to safeguard national sovereignty and security, which are reasonable and appropriate.
Qian urged the US side to earnestly respect the fundamental interests and major concerns of the Chinese side, get rid of the illusion of "containing China through Taiwan" and refrain from continuing down the wrong path.
