2022-08-08T20:44:08.523Z

About 177,000 students will enter first grade this year • Quite a few of them are first-born - so the excitement is evident not only among them, but also among their parents • Hopes and fears of three mothers

Much has been written about the transition of children from kindergarten to first grade.

Many parents enroll their children in workshops, classes and preparatory classes to acquire skills for first grade - the main thing is for the child to be ready for this important transition and change.

In a special article for the opening of the school year that will begin in 23 days - three mothers express their excitement, hopes and great fear that accompanies them.

David's song

Mother of the twins Luria and Anhal: "The feeling is that there is chaos in the system. Only that the children will not be disappointed"

"I imagine there is a ringing bell and everyone is running around, and he feels a little lost in a new place. It keeps me busy," shares Shani Sinwani, mother of Rein, who will enter the first grade this year at the "Ramon" school in Be'er Ya'akov.

This is the first time she is raising a child to first grade.

"In my opinion, more significant advance preparation is needed. Rain is a sensitive child, and we as parents were involved in every setting he studied in. We had a very good relationship with the kindergarten teacher. I am afraid that the move to school will reduce the involvement and that he will feel more of a stranger. In the kindergarten, the level of involvement of The parents are much higher, if for example a social incident happened or in front of the staff, I know for sure that the kindergarten teacher is taking care of it, that she is on top of it. At the school, studies are at the center, and I don't know how much time and attention is devoted to issues that are social and mental."

The school supplies are already ready, and the excitement is at its peak: "I chose all the school supplies, I came to the conclusion that it would be better for him to be less involved in purchasing and equipping days. I see that he is excited and understands that a really big change is coming. I make sure to share with him mainly fun things, like a bag The new one that was bought or in the new library that I ordered for him, but less in terms of school agenda. I think it is more correct to throw him into the water and for him to get to know and experience for himself. We also enrolled him in the afternoon, so that he will have enough time to get to know his classmates after school hours and finish his the homework.

"I wish him to win an amazing educator, who will be significant for him and who he will remember for many years. I know that teaching is not easy and that it takes a lot of luck to meet a good teacher. I really hope that he will have an easy academic and social life, that he will have a soft landing and that the system will know how to take him places are good".

Tamar ben Isaiah

Daniel's mother: "Let there be no homework, the parents don't have the patience to sit through it after a day's work"

"When I entered the school to enroll him in the first grade, I was moved to tears," says Tamar Ben Yeshaya, the mother of Daniel, who will enter the first grade this year at the "Tzemach Sheda" state school in Ma'ale Adumim.

"We already bought a soccer satchel, a soccer pencil case and soccer shoes. I really hope that this year will open, even though I'm skeptical."

Tamar says that she comes from a family that lives in the field of education: "My parents are educators: my father was a teacher and is currently an inspector at the Ministry of Education, and my mother works as an administrator at a high school. We breathe education in the family."

And she has quite a few concerns: "Daniel is a very smart boy, and I really hope that he will have a teacher who will be able to use his potential and abilities together with him. He is curious and loves to learn, and my fear is that they will not get the most out of him, that his thinking will degenerate instead of flourish. I see him In his eyes, he's thirsty to know more things. I think it depends a lot on the teacher. I also saw from experience that there were teachers I wasn't interested in as a student, who would come to work and not work."

Tamar emphasizes that she does not intend to put the teacher on speed dial on her phone.

"Absolutely not. I remember that when I was a child and my father was a teacher, I would get upset when parents would call him, I didn't understand why they were bothering him. I trust educators, the professionals, and I hope I won't be disappointed.

"Also in terms of academics, my son already reads and writes, but I don't know what he needs to learn and what he needs to know at each stage throughout the year. I just hope that there will be no homework. I honestly say like many parents, it takes a lot of patience to sit through it, and parents don't have it After an 8-9 workday. I hope that Daniel will be able to enjoy himself as much as I enjoyed school. You have to look at the whole thing as an experience and not as a nuisance. I wish for myself to be able to let go until the end, and of course be the best in the class."

Rain's mother: "I'm afraid that the transition from kindergarten to school will reduce our involvement as parents"

Luria and Anhal David from Modi'in are twin brother and sister, who will enter the first grade this year at the "Yahed" school in Modi'in (a combined religious and secular school).

Like all parents, their mother, Shir, is also excited, but for her it's a double excitement: "Nevertheless, they are the first children and the first grandchildren to enter the first grade, so the whole extended family revolves around it," she says.

"They themselves are very excited, and maybe also a little afraid because this is the first time they are separated. Until today, they studied together in the same kindergarten, and now we decided to split them up. It was clear to us that they would study in different classes."

While the twins show no signs of concern, with Shir's mother it is a little different: "I am very afraid, first of all, that it will not open this year. The children are already expecting, and I do not want them to be disappointed. Secondly, I see what is happening in the system, the lack of teachers. Thirdly, I don't know how they will manage, the children today are very 'springy', they have a lot of work in kindergarten. Now they will have to move to a setting where they sit quietly most of the day. I don't know how they will be able to cope with it. I am afraid that they will have difficulty concentrating because it is a change drastic".

Another issue that concerns her is the size of the class: "Our school is in great demand, we are talking about 35 children in a class. I am afraid of the physical crowding and that it will harm the children's concentration. I also worry that the teachers will not be able to give the students personal attention."

According to Shir, she would like to see an education system that looks more at the student: "In general, the level of education is not high, there is no individual attention to the children, a child who has developed gaps does not have individual hours. There is no stability, and the feeling is that there is chaos. Every time a new minister comes and makes it dizzy . There is a feeling that everything is technical, to study and do what is necessary, and there is no added value. The problem is not the teachers and educators, but the system itself."
