Starting this Saturday you can confirm, on the website of the Chilean Electoral Service or by phone, if you are a member of the table for the plebiscite on September 4, in which the proposal for a new Constitution.

The members of the table will be in charge of receiving the votes cast and doing the first count on the day of the vote.

The previous day, that is, on September 3, they must also meet at the place where the electoral authorities summon them at 3:00 p.m. to form the receiving table.

The secretaries of the Electoral Boards publish the lists of members this Saturday and within a week, on August 20, they will publish the list of replacement members.

How do I know if I am a table member?

There are at least four ways in which you can find out if you had to be a table member.

What happens if I can't attend on voting day?

Not attending as a member of the table when you were appointed is an electoral infraction and is penalized with a fine that goes to the municipal benefit, according to the Electoral Service.

The fine can have a value of two to eight UTM (Monthly Tax Unit), which at the updated value represents from 117,544 to 470,176 Chilean pesos (approximately US$130 to US$520).

However, there are a number of reasons established by law for which you can justify your absence.

This is the case, for example, if you are outside the country or more than 300 km away from the place where you must participate.

Among the causes is also being over 60 years old —although if you are over 60, you are appointed and you want to participate if you can—, being pregnant, working in a hospital or a long-stay place for the elderly, or being a caregiver for adults. elderly or people with special care needs.

In order to be exempted from your responsibility to be a member of the polling station, you must present your cause and the documents that justify it within three business days after the appointments are published.

The documents depend on the case.

Remember that your employer cannot prohibit you from participating in the process as a member of the polling station: if you have to work on the day of the plebiscite, they must give you permission and cannot deduct your payment for the day.
