The DeLorean DMC-12 gets an electric successor with the Alpha5.

Before the debut in Pebble Beach, there are now first pictures.

Update May 31, 2022, 8:00 a.m.:

There was no question that the DeLorean Motor Company would make a comeback with an electric car.

After all, the manufacturer of the iconic DMC-12 recently posted a few teasers and revealed that the Stromer is to celebrate its premiere on August 18th at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance.

But the DeLorean Motor Company probably didn't want to keep the fans waiting that long and therefore published the first pictures of the electric car.

Similar to the DMC-12, the Alpha5 is also an elegant coupe with gullwing doors.

The glass slats at the rear are also reminiscent of the time machine from "Back to the Future".

Otherwise, the design of the electric car is quite modern and less angular and can keep up with the Mercedes EQS with a drag value of just 0.23.

Nevertheless, the roofline of the Alpha5 is clearly reminiscent of its famous predecessor.

DeLorean also relies on an elegant two-tone look, as known from Mercedes-Maybach, for example.

The Stromer also impresses with massive wheels and slim headlights.

The charging port is on the Alpha5 on the driver's side on the front fender.

This means that the trunk lid does not have to be opened for charging, as was the case with the DMC-12.

The interior, which can accommodate four people, looks very tidy.

You won't find any buttons because, as with other electric cars, control is via a "floating display in the center console.

The Alpha5 manages the sprint from zero to 100 km/h in 3.4 seconds, but it's over at 241 km/h.

According to DeLorean, the 100 kWh battery should enable a range of 483 kilometers.

However, this information refers to the “basic performance model”, so a sharper version of the Stromer should also come.

DeLorean obtains the drive for the Alpha5 from a supplier in Great Britain.

The Alpha5 is also slightly longer than the DMC-12, measuring 4.99 meters.

The Stromer is 2.04 meters wide and – with the doors closed – 1.37 meters high.

Production will take place in Italy and will be limited to 88 units.

However, a V8 sports coupe is also to follow.

DeLorean Alpha5 presented: Fans react divided

On Facebook, however, the Alpha5 is causing mixed reactions.

Many users like the Stromer very much.

"The first beautiful electric car," writes one user.

And the proportions are also praised.

However, some Facebook users are reminded of another car: "Ah, the Lucid Air Coupé."

However, some users are disappointed with the DeLorean Alpha5: “I was really hoping that I would like it better than I do now.

Too bad.” In addition, some users would have liked more elements of the design of the DMC-12: “It’s just a nice car with gullwing doors.”

Update April 7, 2022, 2 p.m.:

The question of whether a legendary car should be reissued as an electric version is hotly debated – especially with a vehicle like the DeLorean DMC-12.

Because commercially, the car was anything but a success, which had to do with massive quality problems, among other things.

Uneven gap dimensions were still a relatively small shortcoming, more trouble caused jamming gullwing doors and overheated engines.

Nevertheless, the DMC-12 should now come in an electric version - the DeLorean Motor Company has now published a few details.

Among other things, the company posted a photo showing a section of the rear of the concept vehicle – it is still unclear how close the study is to a possible production version.

According to the DeLorean Motor Company, the concept vehicle was created in cooperation with Italdesign.

The vehicle is said to be officially unveiled on August 18 at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance.

DeLorean teases electric car: "Nothing will ever beat the original"

There were two things in particular that made the DeLorean DMC-12 so extraordinary: its stainless steel outer skin - and its gullwing doors.

The study will probably have installed the doors that swing upwards, as a teaser video that has already been published shows - but whether they will also come in a series version is questionable - because, as already mentioned, such a construction is technically vulnerable.

In any case, the response to the new Twitter picture is divided: "Nothing will ever beat the original," someone commented.

Another user says: "It doesn't look like a DeLorean." But not everyone sees it that way: "Looks good so far," someone writes.

Another can hardly wait for the unveiling: "I'm really looking forward to the model!" A user already has a funny name suggestion: "Please call it eLorean!"

First report February 16, 2022, 3:59 p.m.:

Humble (Texas) – Some old car brands have now been forgotten.

Not many people remember the DeLorean Motor Company, which was liquidated in February 1983.

The DMC-12 became a cult car thanks to its role as a time machine in the "Back to the Future" series.

DeLorean has now taken the film title to heart and is making a comeback.

As early as 2022, the first electric car that could be called EVolved should come onto the market.

The newly founded company has now published a first teaser of the vehicle on Twitter.

It says: "The future was never promised".

However, not much can be seen in the 15-second video.

However, the electric car seems to tie in with the legendary DMC-12.

In the teaser, two wing doors can be seen opening.

Overall, the silhouette looks very dynamic.

The bonnet also seems to be more pronounced than on the DMC-12.

The front is adorned with an illuminated V emblem.

However, the similarity is no coincidence, because DeLorean is working with the Audi subsidiary Italdesign on the new electric car.

The design studio was founded by Giorgetto Giugiaro (83), who designed the DMC-12 at the time.

However, he has since left Italdesign.

Italdesign also published a teaser of the new DeLorean last year.

The two vehicles hardly differ.

In the design studio's draft, however, the DMC logo is emblazoned on the front of the electric car.

It is not yet known when the new DeLorean will be launched and what it will cost.

The electric DeLorean could be based on the modular EVX platform that Italdesign developed together with Williams Advanced Engineering.

This enables an output of up to 1,360 hp (1,000 kW) and a range of 1,000 km.

In addition, the focus could be more on luxury cars in the future.

He was of particular interest to many readers.

That's why we're offering it again.

Irrespective of this, the teaser gives Twitter users plenty of reason to be happy.

One or the other user also uses the opportunity for a tip against Tesla:

  • “Uh oh I see another Tesla killer.

Elon is probably shaking in his boots.”

  • "That is what I have been waiting for !!!!!"

  • "Hopefully I'll be able to just stuff some junk in there and time travel."

  • "Please, hard lines.

    Keeps the 80's style.”

  • "When it's finally revealed, it should be backed out of a truck with smoke."
