How high can the tension between the United States and China rise?
Despite calls from Westerners, the Chinese army announced on Monday the continuation of military exercises near Taiwan, again in protest against the visit last week to the island claimed by Beijing by the American number three Nancy Pelosi.
“The People's Liberation Army (…) continues to conduct practical joint exercises in the sea and air space around Taiwan, focusing on joint anti-submarine and sea assault operations,” it said. in a press release the Eastern Theater Command.

The American Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, had denounced the "total disproportion" according to him of the Chinese reaction and in particular of these maneuvers, during which Chinese missiles were fired.
After criticism from the G7 and the United States, he and his Japanese and Australian counterparts issued a joint statement calling on China to stop these military exercises.
Sino-American talks suspended
As a reminder, China completed its largest military maneuvers ever around Taiwan on Sunday, after the visit to the island by the Speaker of the US House of Representatives.
The Taiwanese Ministry of Defense confirmed that China had deployed "aircraft, ships and drones" around the strait, "to simulate attacks on the main island of Taiwan and on boats in our waters".

Nicole Pelosi sparked fury in China with her visit Tuesday and Wednesday, the largest by a US lawmaker to Taiwan in 25 years.
Beijing, which has always considered this territory as one of its provinces, reacted by suspending a series of Sino-American discussions and cooperation, in particular on climate change and defense.
