The esteemed Danish director Lars von Trier ("Breaking the Waves", "Melancholia") revealed this evening (Monday) that he was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, a neurological disease that causes impaired body movements.

In a message sent by Luisa Vesta, Von Trier's producer and partner for many years, it was written that he approved the publication of his illness in public.

According to her, these days he is working on the new season of the mini-series "The Kingdom" which he created, which was broadcast in 1994 and which was very successful.

"In order to avoid speculation about Lars' health before the premiere of the series at the upcoming Venice Film Festival, we would like to announce that he is in a good mood and that he is receiving treatment for his symptoms. Work on the series continues as usual," she said.

Following the illness of the director, who is associated with the Exemplary 95 school and whose film "Dancing in the Dark" won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 2000, he will hold very few events to promote the series.

The 66-year-old Von Trier is one of Europe's most respected directors, one whose films have received much acclaim even if they have not received favorable reviews.

He became known as a director who makes it very difficult for actors to work with him and as a great provocateur.

Watch von Trier say that he identifies with Adolf Hitler:

One of the most prominent examples of this occurred at the 2011 Cannes Film Festival, when "Melancholia" participated in the main competition.

During a press conference held after the screening of the film, he declared "I am a Nazi" and even claimed that he understood Adolf Hitler.

This caused a great uproar, which led the organizers of the festival to ban him from attending for seven years, until 2018, when he screened there (out of competition) the film "The House that Jack Built".

In an interview held in 2018 with the British newspaper "The Guardian", the director attributed the fact that his hands are shaking to antidepressants and alcohol withdrawal.

"I'm working on my alcoholism, and it's in good shape," von Trier said.

"I had a period where I didn't drink for eight months, and I will soon go back to it again. But I have this 'tool' of alcohol that I use when I need to. When I have a big anxiety attack, it's the only thing that helps me."
