When the Gräfelfingen fire brigade equipment house went into operation in 1972, it was one of the most modern things that existed in this regard.

50 years later, there is an urgent need for action.

A new extension is intended to remedy the shortcomings.

And there are many of them.

Graefelfing

– The feasibility study, which the architects prepared in close cooperation with the fire brigade and the municipal building authority, started with a long list of defects in the existing building.

The separation of dirt and contaminated material is not optimally possible, the changing rooms are not adapted to today's high proportion of women and young people among the active.

The emergency power supply decided by the municipal council is in good hands with the fire brigade, but it needs space.

In addition, the respiratory protection workshop no longer meets today's requirements in terms of size and equipment.

The elevator is too small and does not connect all levels.

There is a height difference between the northern administrative wing and the southern commercial wing;

in the service wing itself a further offset of 50 centimeters, which makes material transport more difficult.

Elongated bar planned

The architects examined several adjacent areas as a construction site for an extension.

Ultimately, they now suggested building an extension in the form of an intermediate clasp, which will be located where the respiratory protection workshop and cloakrooms are today - a long bar roughly in the east-west direction.

The basement could remain unchanged, the northern part of the building could be rebuilt.

For this purpose, the respiratory protection workshop and the cloakrooms on the ground floor would be demolished and rebuilt enlarged.

Five to six barrier-free apartments are to be built on the first floor of the new building, which is being built using modern lightweight construction and will have a photovoltaic system - for members of the fire brigade or employees of the municipality.

A new elevator in the administration wing is to open up all levels and also make the stairs between the vehicle hall and the respiratory protection workshop superfluous.

According to current cost estimates, the new, relatively large intermediate building will cost around 3.7 million euros, of which almost one million would be for the apartments.

The building committee had recommended that the municipal council enter into work phases two and three and draw up concrete plans for the study with specialist planners.

The council unanimously followed the recommendation.
