Harald V, whose functions are essentially symbolic, suffered from several health problems recently: Covid, knee surgery in 2021 and respiratory problems the previous year.
He also had surgery in 2003 for bladder cancer, then underwent another operation in 2005 for heart valve problems, which was replaced in another operation in 2020. Sporting sovereign and skipper emeritus - he has notably participated in the world sailing championships at the end of July in Geneva - he has always refused to abdicate.
