Hong Kong eases COVID-19 quarantine for overseas arrivals

By Lauren Lau and Alex Stambaugh

The Hong Kong government announced on Monday that it will ease quarantine measures for incoming travellers, reducing the number of days required for international arrivals at government-designated hotels from seven days to three from August 12.

Travelers arriving from abroad, excluding those from the mainland, will now be allowed to spend three days in hotel quarantine, followed by four days under "home medical surveillance" provided they test negative for covid-19 during those days. days, Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee said on Monday.

Those traveling from mainland China must still undergo a seven-day quarantine at home or a government-designated hotel.

However, Lee said that she is in talks with mainland Chinese officials about opening its border with Hong Kong.

The government said it will introduce a new health code system, classifying those undergoing home health surveillance as "yellow."

People under medical surveillance must undergo daily rapid tests and, if negative, will be allowed to go to work, shop and travel on public transport.

However, they will not be allowed to enter "high risk" places or places without a mask, which includes dining at restaurants, gyms and lounges.

Once completed, the person's health code status will turn "blue" as long as they have tested negative for covid-19 at all times.

If a person ever tests positive for COVID-19, their health code status will turn "red" and they will need to self-isolate.

Lee, who vowed to strengthen the city's position as a global business hub when he took over as leader earlier this year, said the new requirements were based on scientific data and were intended to keep Hong Kong competitive.

"While we can control the threat to public health, we also want to ensure that society can have the highest degree of economic and social activities so that society can function as normally as possible and Hong Kong's competitiveness can be maintained." Lee said.
