A leader of the Palestinian Fatah movement was shot dead on Monday (August 8th) in the Palestinian refugee camp of Aïn el-Héloué in southern Lebanon, a local Fatah leader said.
Said Alaeddine held the rank of officer in President Mahmoud Abbas's Fatah movement, in charge of liaison with the Lebanese security forces, according to local military chief Mounir al-Maqdah.
He was shot and killed by an unknown man who shot him while he was praying in a friend's house in the camp, according to the same source.
Said Alaeddine was taken to hospital where he died.
The motives of the assailant who managed to flee were not immediately known.
Tens of thousands of Palestinian refugees live in Lebanon, most of them in the country's 12 camps, including that of Aïn Héloué, the largest, located near Saïda.
Under a long-standing agreement, the Lebanese army does not enter these camps, where security is provided by Palestinian factions.
