I'm rather amazed that this can surprise.
In reality, Jean-Luc Mélenchon has long been lending a conciliatory discourse vis-à-vis authoritarian regimes.
He alternately expressed his support for Cuba, Venezuela, Russia, affirming in particular that the problem of the Baltic States came from a bad negotiation of the borders with the former Soviet empire.
What a shame for a left-wing leader, he doesn't seem to be very interested in the right of peoples to self-determination.
