An earthquake measuring 6 on the Richter scale struck east of Shekotan Island of the Russian Kuril Islands, but no information was reported on casualties or material damage.
"The epicenter of the earthquake occurred 117 kilometers to the east of the town of Malukurilskoye on the island of Shikotan, at a depth of 25 kilometers," the Russian Sputnik news agency quoted Yelena Semenova, head of the seismological monitoring station, Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, as saying in a statement today.
The Kuril Islands are located in an active volcanic seismic zone. Fifty islands extend over a thousand kilometers and belong to the Russian province of Sakhalin.
