Nearly 200 people demonstrated Monday, August 8 in Rabat in solidarity with the Palestinians, following the deadly clashes between Israel and the armed group Islamic Jihad in Gaza, also demanding the "

fall

" of normalization between Rabat and the Jewish state.

The demonstrators, gathered in front of the parliament in the center of the kingdom's capital, held up placards condemning "

the Zionist aggression against the Gaza Strip

", noted an AFP journalist.

They also chanted slogans against the restoration of diplomatic relations between Israel and Morocco.

"

The people want the fall of normalization

," proclaimed the protesters, mostly from far left and Islamist parties.

An Israeli flag was burned during this demonstration which comes the day after a truce between the Palestinian armed group Islamic Jihad and the Jewish state, obtained thanks to the mediation of Egypt.

During three days of hostilities, 44 Palestinians including children died in Israeli strikes on the Gaza Strip.

Israel and Morocco normalized their diplomatic relations in December 2020 as part of the Abraham Accords, a process between the Jewish state and several Arab countries, supported by Washington.

In return, the Trump administration recognized Morocco's sovereignty over the disputed territory of Western Sahara.

This normalization is accompanied by an increasingly regular flow of Israeli delegations to Morocco.

Last week, Israeli Police Chief Yaakov Shabtai paid an official visit to the kingdom.
