President Yitzhak Herzog visited Sderot today (Monday) with the heads of the Gaza surrounding authorities: Sderot Mayor Alon Davidi, Eshkol Council Chief Gadi Yarkoni, Negev Fields Council Chief Tamir Aidan, Ashkelon Beach Council Chief Itamar Rabivo and Shaar Hanegev Council Chief Ofir Libstein.
The President of the State opened his remarks by saying: "I am coming here on behalf of the entire people of Israel to say thank you, and through you also to all the citizens of Otaf and the city of Sderot. Without this area, there is no State of Israel. You are the gateway to the State of Israel and you are the wall that protects the State of Israel.
The event we went through in the last few days teaches us many things, first of all it teaches us resilience, extraordinary resilience.
The residents will function in an amazing way, and much of this is due to you, the heads of the authorities who demonstrate unusual mental fortitude.
I heard you and saw you and the soothing sayings that radiate confidence and calmness.
"I want to thank the Prime Minister, the Minister of Defense, the Chief of Staff, and all the security and defense systems of the State of Israel and the Israel Defense Forces, the Shin Bet, the rescue and rescue systems and the Home Front Command, and all the factors that worked together with you in defense. Now the work is of course in the resilience centers, in the treatment the psychological, in the post-traumatic treatment and in learning the lessons to be ready for any development.
"I hope and wish that now it seems quiet and that the citizens of Israel know peace and security. You always have to be prepared for any threat that may come. In conclusion, I repeat that the citizens of Israel are grateful to you today. Thank you for your courage, leadership and responsibility."
Also present at the meeting were the CEO of the President's House, Eyal Shuiki, the Military Secretary to the President, Brigadier General Naama Grimberg Rosen, and the Chairman of the Fund for Terror Victims of the Jewish Agency, Ayelet Nahmias Varbin.
