She wanted to make pop, but indie came out again: "I thank God for the corona virus"

Shiran Karni and Regev Baruch, members of the successful indie band "Between El Funk", are launching a new band and a single with a psychedelic music video born thanks to a grant from the Lottery which feels like an end party for the Corona crisis.

And also: what is the connection between fenugreek, drugs and sex?

Shiran Karni (37) and Regev Baruch (34) who met in the corridors of the Jerusalem Academy of Music, you probably know as two of the members of the group "Binth El Punk" - who bring to the front of the stage a combination of traditional Yemeni influences, funk, afrobeat and everything in between.

Today they are in the advanced stages of a third album, perform at local festivals and around the world and you can say they are the darlings of the indie scene in Israel and abroad.

Two years ago Karni and Baruch reunited under new-old circumstances.

This time it was the corona crisis and the peak of the first wave that left many artists without a cultural roof.

The clubs were closed, the shows were canceled and the fans were left with memories from YouTube.

But it was precisely out of the chaos, loneliness and public anger that plagued the streets of Jerusalem that the musical duo "Shirj" (a combination of the names Shiran and Regev) was born, stretching the limits of the two's musical abilities.

In short, what happens when two hopeless optimists turn a lemon into a lemonade

"When the epidemic started, we were after the launch of a second album. At first we were still able to perform on a small scale, but in one moment everything was cancelled."

restores rays.

"We were sitting at home, we had time to fill in calls. One of them was from the lottery, who also helped us finance the music video for our new single."

You can say that you used your free time properly

Shiran: "We received several small grants that helped us sustain. But I was looking to do barter and one of them was with a friend from Facebook who taught me Ableton in exchange for learning Yemeni poetry and it was one of the most successful things that the corona made me do. Without a recording studio At home and in the rehearsal rooms, I simply said to Regev, 'Come on, let's create.'"

Regev: "It turned out that everyone did their research alone at home in front of the computer and only later did we meet to work on the songs."

The composition that stretches the limit of the two's musical ability.

"Pop" is the first single from Shirge's full album that will be released soon.

From Hindus of the new sound created by Shiran and Regev with nuances of Yemeni groove.

The song is accompanied by a super invested clip that oozes style, which is like a flashback to the events of the last two years that shook us all.

Between social isolation and secret parties and the chaos of Balfour.

The clip is Shirj's first collaboration with the choreographer and dancer Avitar Said.

"All the extras in the video clip are friends who came and volunteered and were with us in the difficult and painful moments we had. One of the couples who kiss in the video clip recently got engaged," Carney adds.

The new single is called "Pop".

But like the lyrics of the song, in the end you got Indy

Sheeran again: "Because that's really what happened. We started to sample Yemeni tin with a groove and electronic beats created in meetings with friends sitting over Yemeni soup with fenugreek."

How is it different from working with an experienced lineup like Benth El Funk?

Sheeran: "There we are used to performing with real instruments and not with a computer. So this whole experience with Shirj is a completely new experience. I am very much looking forward to the reactions and to see how people experience it and if they identify with our interpretation of the period."

Regev: "We made music videos with Benth El Funk, but not productions of this magnitude. It was very stressful but also good, because we felt that we had moved up a class."

Is there social criticism in your music video?

"I remember that during one of the meetings I held in my apartment, the police came and asked to check how many people were in the house and we received reports.

It was a time when everyone was lost and trying to find themselves.

They needed human contact even when it was forbidden.

So it can be said that this clip summarizes the Corona crisis, the demonstrations that were in Jerusalem and including the experience of two unstable years that we spent in front of screens.

I do thank God for this period, but I also cannot ignore the fact that it was very tough."
