Steuerwald becomes assistant coach at Dresden volleyball players

Immediately before the start of training, volleyball Bundesliga club Dresdner SC presented a new assistant to head coach Alexander Waibl on Monday.

The successor to the Belgian Bart Janssen will be Markus Steuerwald, a former German national player who was one of the key players at record champions VfB Friedrichshafen for years.

Dresden – After the 2020/21 season, the native of the Black Forest also ended his professional career at Lake Constance and then completed the course to become an A trainer.

The world-class libero, who won four championship titles and five cups with Friedrichshafen and also won the Champions League, but also became French champion with Paris, wore the jersey of the German national team a total of 164 times.

His greatest successes include the 2014 World Championship bronze medal and fifth place at the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

In Dresden, the father of two is now starting the coaching business and has signed a one-year contract with the six-time German champions.

Waibl, who has known Steuerwald since he was young, said: "We had some very good options for this coaching position in our team.

However, Markus was always my first choice because I found the fact that he knows about as much about women's volleyball as I do about men's volleyball exciting and inspiring.

Markus will learn from women, I from men.

In addition, Markus can pass on his experiences to our players.”

"Dresden has been a top address in volleyball for over ten years and is one of the top four teams in the Bundesliga, has won championships and cups and is known for its great work with young people," Steuerwald explained his decision for the DSC.

The novice coach said of his goals: "It's my first year as an assistant coach and I want to learn a lot.

I want to know the coaching side of the business because so far I've only seen the player side.

I think I'm in good hands with Alexander Waibl and I can develop further with him.” dpa
