According to a study by Südharz Kali GmbH, the potash deposits in Thuringia's Eichsfeld are "extremely profitable".
On average, one million tons of potash fertilizer could be produced annually, the company announced on Monday at its headquarters in Erfurt.
The company, which was founded in Australia, had explored potash deposits in northern Thuringia in the past few months and initiated drilling at two locations in the Ohm Mountains.
Erfurt/Worbis - Potash mining has a long tradition in the region in northern Thuringia.
There were several potash mines up until a few years after reunification.
The best known because of a several-week hunger strike by the miners is the one in Bischofferode that was closed at the end of 1993.
Südharz Kali GmbH and its parent company South Harz Potash Ltd.
have now completed the economic assessment of the potash deposit in the Eichsfeld Ohmgebirge, according to the statement.
As two confirmation wells in the first half of the year have already shown, the region is an attractive mining location for the fertilizer raw material.
For the first time, the potash deposits have been evaluated using international standards.
