Two days before the Likud primaries, the Supreme Court of the Likud decided this evening (Monday) that the candidacy of his uncle Laniado, who is running in the primaries for the Tel Aviv district, cannot be disqualified.
In doing so, he overturned the decision of the Election Commission, which disqualified Laniado last week after he hid criminal information in his past.
Laniado was convicted of housebreaking in 2011, but last week it was announced that he hid another offense in his past and that in 2010 he was sent to house arrest for assaulting a woman.
Therefore, the election committee disqualified his candidacy.
The court accepted Laniado's appeal and overturned the decision, arguing that there are legal obstacles in disqualifying a candidate due to a statute-barred offense.
However, the judges called on him to "examine and consider the consequences of his candidacy, in light of his statement before us, that if he is convinced that his candidacy harms the good of the movement, he will do the right thing on his own initiative."
Likud Chairman Binyamin Netanyahu instructed Likud Ombudsman Avi Halevi to file an appeal with the District Court against the approval of his uncle Laniado's candidacy. Laniado was represented at the court by attorney Uri Haberman from the Sharkon, Ben Ami, Asher & Co. office.

Dor Harlap, the candidate who petitioned against Laniado who is running in the Tel Aviv district, said that "the decision of the court of the movement is wrong in my eyes. What is not done by the court will be done by Likud members from the Tel Aviv district at the ballot box."
Laniado is considered a close associate of MK David Bitan, until his disqualification last week was also considered the leading candidate in the Tel Aviv district, who will be ranked 38th on the list.
In recent weeks, Likud Chairman Benjamin Netanyahu has invested a lot of effort to get him to step down and influence the contest in the district, fearing that he will be loyal to Bitan and due to his criminal past.
Among other things, Netanyahu pressured his spokesman, Yonatan Urich, to submit a candidacy for the Tel Aviv district slot in order to defeat Leniado, But Urich withdrew his candidacy this week. Later, Netanyahu also pressured his close associate, former journalist Boaz Bismut, to run in the Tel Aviv district against Laniado, but Bismut refused and preferred to run on the national list.
