The Likud primaries: Netanyahu fears a low voter turnout Israel today

2022-08-08T20:50:14.680Z

As part of the state approach he is trying to adopt, the head of the opposition wants to push out Likud members with an outspoken style • The party's court qualified the candidacy of a candidate convicted of burglary • Just before they were to take the functional test several of the prominent candidates arrived at the "Israel Hayom" studio - Miri Regev, Galit Distel Atbarian, Shlomo Karai and Osnat Mark

A day before the Likud primaries - and the tension is at its peak.

The Likud feared that due to the "Dawn" operation, the primaries would be postponed to September, but in light of the ceasefire and the end of the operation, the Likud primaries will be held as scheduled tomorrow.

Party Chairman Benjamin Netanyahu fears a low voter turnout in the primaries following the operation. He held phone calls with branch heads yesterday to encourage them to go out and vote on Wednesday. Netanyahu also posted videos and sent text messages to all the officials demanding to go out and vote.

The chairman of the Likud wants to significantly increase the voting rate among the free functionaries in order to push organized candidates from the list. Netanyahu would like to preserve the existing list and prevent the entry of people who would damage the list. He wants state figures to be placed in the high places and not Likud members with a blunt and aggressive style. The goal of Netanyahu in the current election is trying to bring soft right votes from the disillusioned right and new hope to get the 61st mandate.

Netanyahu asked to appeal

Evidence of an attempt to adopt a state approach could be seen during the operation, when Netanyahu agreed to meet with Lapid for a security briefing, and also gave full backing to the government.

The head of the opposition suffered a blow last night in an attempt to influence the list, when the Likud court qualified the candidacy of his uncle Laniado, who was previously convicted of house burglaries, in the primaries in the Tel Aviv district. All this after Netanyahu's attempts to thwart his candidacy behind the scenes. In light of this, Netanyahu guided the Likud ombudsman to submit an appeal to the district court against the approval of Laniado's candidacy.

Not excited about Leniado

Former MK Osnat Mark said in the "Israel Hayom" studio about Lenaido and candidates with a criminal record: "A good list brings two more mandates, and a bad list steals two mandates.

People who have butter on their heads cannot enter the list."

The conspiracy against Regev:

MK Miri Regev also came to the "Israel Hayom" studio and commented on the female battle within the list: "Those who say I am strong are trying to weaken me, and also those who say I have become weak are trying to hurt me.

I believe I will finish in the top five, first woman.

I want to return to the Ministry of Transportation and Road Safety."

Distel vs. Sharon

Another storm that arose in Likud in recent days is around the candidacy of Gilad Sharon, who was a senior partner in the move of his father, the late former Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, to carry out the disengagement from Gush Katif.

MK Galit Distel-Atbarian explained in the "Israel Today" studio her position regarding Gilad Sharon after she was recorded complimenting him at one of the Likud's conferences: "There is a practice in the Likud to introduce and say a good word about everyone present at the conference.

I didn't know the trick that if someone is sitting with whom there is a problem then no one is introduced.

That was a mistake.

I renounce Gilad Sharon, who to this day does not see how much of a sin he is, how much the deportation is the biggest anti-human act that happened here."

Karai method for appointing judges

Another issue that has a significant discussion in the Likud primaries is the attitude towards the legal system.

MK Shlomo Karai was a guest in the "Israel Hayom" studio and said: "I have a proposal for the establishment of a new judicial court, where the judges will be chosen by the Knesset, and it will represent all Knesset parties.

Its judges will undergo a hearing in the Knesset's Constitution Committee and they will be given powers according to what the Knesset decides - I certainly won't hide animals."
