Special envoy to Mykolaiv
Light is deceiving.
In the morning, Mykolaiv only seems to be what it was.
A quiet little town in southern Ukraine in the middle of summer.
Grandmothers trudge along the clean sidewalks, meticulously following the shade of the trees.
Suddenly howling sirens shatter the image without provoking the slightest emotion in passers-by.
The war that is shaking the country is just a sad and usual reality.
“What can we do about it anyway.
To run?
This is useless.
And leave to leave my city, certainly not
,” grumbles Khaterina Alexandrova, 78.
"That's the real problem,"
she adds, pointing to the cart of empty bottles she's dragging.
For months, Mykolaiv has been without running water.
So Khaterina, like the others, is forced to go around the neighborhood to look for the tank trucks that supply the inhabitants.
The time is over for chaos around these water points.
