For the fourth time since May, human remains have been found in the drying waters of Lake Mead, authorities said Saturday.

In the latest incident, Lake Mead National Park rangers received a call on Saturday morning for skeletal remains in the Swim Beach area.

Park rangers closed off the beach area to collect the remains with the help of divers from the Las Vegas Police Department, according to park services.

A coroner was called to determine the cause of death.

Before that, in three separate incidents, human remains were found in the lake in areas where the water level had dropped to an unprecedented low due to the ongoing water crisis in the western United States.

The previous remains, including a body with a gunshot wound found in a barrel, were in various stages of decomposition, and it would be difficult to extract DNA from them, officials said.

It is not yet clear how long the remains lay in the lake.

In July, the United States space agency, NASA, revealed dramatic satellite images showing the drying up of water in Lake Mead - the largest reservoir in the United States, located in the states of Nevada and Arizona on the Colorado River - due to the ongoing drought.

"The largest reservoir in the United States provides water For millions of people in seven states, tribal lands and northern Mexico," NASA wrote.

"It also provides clear evidence of climate change and the long-term drought that may be the most severe in the western United States in 12 centuries."

If you compare the photos - one from July 6, 2000, and the other from July 3, 2022 - you can see the lake is full of water in the first photo.

In the second photo you can already see the bank of the lake, which was always below the surface of the water, exposed due to the drying up of the water.

According to government data, the water level at the Hoover Dam was about 365 meters in July 2000. In July 2022, it can be seen that the height dropped by about 50 meters to about 317 meters.

On July 18, 2022, the lake was only 27% full, according to NASA. At its peak in the 1980s, the water level in the man-made Lake Mead reached 370 meters. Today, the water level is at its lowest since the lake was filled. first in the 1930s.

Police are now investigating the various human remains found in the lake. A homicide investigation was opened into the remains found in a box on May 1. The remains appear to belong to a man who died in the late 1970s or early 1980s , according to the police.

Other remains found on May 7 are estimated to be of a man aged 23-27.

It is not yet clear how he died.

The third set found on July 25 is of partial remains that are in the initial stage of examination, according to CNN.

A spokesperson for the national park told CNN that one possible explanation is that the remains belong to people who drowned in the lake in the past.

A World War II-era vessel was also found in the lake, park authorities said in early July.

The serious consequences of drought are also visible in Europe, in the Po River which is drying up.

The Po River is a river in northern Italy.

Its total length is about 652 km, and it is the longest of the rivers in Italy. The wide Po Valley around the Po River is the most industrialized area in Italy, and is densely populated. A severe drought that shrinks the river also reveals interesting items that had been submerged at the bottom for decades.

On July 25, fishermen discovered An unexploded bomb from the Second World War era in a village in the province of Lombardy. The Italian army neutralized it yesterday (Sunday) and moved the 450 kg bomb, which contained 240 kg of explosives, to a controlled explosion area. About 3,000 masked people were evacuated from their homes to transfer The bomb was safe. The airspace was also closed to traffic, and road transport, train traffic and river cruises were stopped.

The Po River has reached an unprecedented low due to the lack of rain and melting snow, alongside an increase in temperatures - due to climate change.

Italy declared a state of emergency last month in the areas near the Po, where the current water level is one tenth of the average level.

"The vegetation on the banks of the river, the birds and the animals have disappeared, the entire ecosystem around the fresh water, no longer exists," Gincarlo Mantovani, director of a corporation responsible for the Po Delta, said last week.
