Work on the “Zukunftsbahnhof 2020” in Freising has started.

The first step: the station forecourt will be redesigned.

Freising

- Here we go: Freising is being converted into the "Zukunftsbahnhof 2020".

Deutsche Bahn has started to redesign the station forecourt.

In January 2021, the city's planning committee saw the plans, but had still made improvements to the parking space situation and requested further information and documents (we reported).

The demands now seem to have been met as DB recently started the redesign.

Check the bike again

Essentially, the planning had envisaged the construction of a wooden pavilion in the area of the short-term car park opposite the station entrance, in which a café and a bicycle repair shop are also to be housed.

The wooden pavilion will be erected in an elevated construction (including stairs and ramp).

This is accompanied by the relocation of the short-term parking spaces and the installation of another bookcase, a Bike-O-Mats and a bicycle repair station.

(By the way: everything from the region is now also available in our regular Freising newsletter.)

The aim is to give commuters the opportunity to have their bikes checked again before setting off and to stock up on regional products.

Because the integration of regional products and operators is in the foreground, the DB had emphasized.

In 2020, Freising was chosen as one of two "future train stations" in Bavaria and 16 in all of Germany.

The company reports that DB will receive 86 billion euros from the federal government for the next ten years for this and for improving the railway infrastructure

Pedestrian underpass to be embellished

In general, the forecourt should be upgraded.

The pedestrian underpass also aims to beautify the railway, improve the wayfinding system for the visually impaired and the blind, and set up a bike-sharing model.

And: The city has commissioned a structural report for the entire station area, which includes the P+R car park, which is currently very space-intensive and nevertheless overcrowded.

The aim here is “to reduce the space required by building underground car parks or parking decks”, it says – a complex plan that must be considered independently of the future train station project.
