Cautiously optimistic news for all train commuters in the Oberland: After the serious accident in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, trains will soon be running there again.

Garmisch-Partenkirchen – As reported by Deutsche Bahn in a press release, the authorities will soon be releasing the Munich-Garmisch-Partenkirchen route so that repair work can finally begin.

On June 3rd, the regional train in the direction of Munich derailed in the Garmisch district of Burgrain.

Five people died in the train accident and many were injured.

Since then nothing has worked on the route, the rail replacement service causes more trouble than it keeps the timetable going.

Munich-Garmisch-Partenkirchen railway line: Train services planned again from mid-September

And: Many routes in the Oberland have since been closed for repairs or maintenance work, or the train has set up slow-moving sections out of concern that a similar accident could happen there.

The railway puts it this way: "Therefore, DB decided to maintain the existing rail replacement services on the routes Garmisch-Partenkirchen - Pfronten-Steinach, Murnau - Garmisch-Partenkirchen - Mittenwald, Murnau - Oberammergau and Seeshaupt - Kochel in order to ensure that passengers in the To create a plannable and as stable as possible offer in the region.

Longer-term planning means that replacement buses can be organized and deployed more reliably despite the currently tense situation on the market.

This timetable concept will initially apply until mid-September.”

So now the repairs in Garmisch-Partenkirchen should also begin.

Around the accident site in Burgrain, around 700 meters of rail and 500 sleepers must be renewed.

In addition, new overhead lines and masts are required.

If everything goes well, by the start of the school year on September 13, the trains should “for the most part be stable again on the main route from Munich via Garmisch to Mittenwald,” according to the announcement.

Deutsche Bahn admits that not everything has gone well in the past few weeks: “The quality of the Werdenfels network was recently unacceptable and in no way meets our own standards.

We apologize for this to the passengers, for whom we were unfortunately unable to offer a good ride in many cases," says Klaus-Dieter Josel, DB Group Representative in Bavaria.

For this reason, according to the announcement, DB is starting an “extensive investment program” in addition to the necessary repair work.

How this should look like will be communicated soon.
