The FBI investigators are said to have spent several hours in Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate and even broke open a safe: Investigators searched the former US President's residence in Florida.
Trump himself spread the news of the raid on his Truth Social platform.
It is apparently about confidential documents that he is said to have taken home with him after his time as president.
This would be a criminal offence.
The raid mobilized Trump's supporters across the country - fans gathered in front of the Palm Beach property in the evening.
They suspect political persecution.

The whole thing is an attempt to keep him from running for president again.
The ex-president, seen here at the weekend at the CPAC, is currently leaving open whether he will compete again.
It is unclear whether Trump's numerous legal problems would deter or mobilize his supporters.
