It was the mammoth task par excellence for the municipality of Glonn in the past few months: the complete renovation of the elementary and middle school.

A tour.

Glonn

– The school is snoring.

The ventilation system hums endlessly against the silence in the classrooms.

The chairs on the tables are deserted between the bare, white walls.

The laughing and screaming of children's voices that echo through the Glonner elementary and middle school: already after a week of summer vacation unreal past.

The clicking of the locking system breaks the almost perfect silence.

Doris Pfefferkorn, the principal, is busy with organizational matters in the first week of vacation and, together with Glonn's mayor Josef Oswald (CSU), leads through the empty school.

"It was all shell construction here," she says, letting her gaze wander down the stairwell.

Elementary and middle school Glonn: renovation costs almost 4 million euros

It is hardly more than six months since the middle school building with the auditorium from the early 1970s was completely renovated.

For just under four million euros, the mayor estimates, the final bill is still pending.

An expensive story with a good ending, Oswald thinks: "The costs didn't run away." Initially, 2.8 million euros plus a number of additional costs were calculated, and this framework was not completely exceeded, as is often the case with comparable buildings.

For this purpose, a sparkling clean school building with wood-panelled, externally insulated walls in Glonn am Klosterweg now complements the ensemble of elementary and middle school, swimming pool and sports hall.

PV modules gleam on the roof.

In between, chimney-like superstructures reveal where the showpiece of the school renovation is hidden: in the attic.

Almost the entire space under the ridge beam is crammed with the new ventilation system's tangle of aluminium-lined tubes – from there the humming machine stretches out its lines like tentacles into the classrooms.

Mayor Oswald: Festivals can always remain closed

“This means the windows can actually remain closed all the time,” says the mayor.

The permanent ventilation ensures that enough oxygen reaches the learning children's brains - while the summer heat or winter cold stay outside.

In addition, the wooden slatted ceiling not only provides sound insulation when it gets louder, but there is even a natural smell of the material in the classrooms, a little like a wooden house.

In addition to the obligatory projection screen for beamers, teachers' laptops and document cameras, the classic chalk board also hangs in the seven classrooms.

That's what the school wanted.

The rector thinks: "It turned out really nice." Because of the pandemic situation, the big inauguration break after this year's Christmas holidays was canceled - instead, Pfefferkorn ceremonially inaugurated the respective room with each class and noticed: "The children are happy when they beautiful, new rooms.” A big plus is the improved acoustics – and finally the middle school is on the same level as the primary school building renovated in 2011 in terms of insulation and fire protection. Incidentally, like so much in Glonn, heating is provided by district heating.

Speaking of fire protection: the "German DIN madness", as he calls it, made Mayor Oswald shake his head during construction.

For example, walls near the toilets had to be torn down and rebuilt almost immediately – because they were a good centimeter too thin.

"Fire protection and statics do not know any protection," says the head of the town hall succinctly.

This also applies to the foundation of the fire escape staircase.

"That would withstand a Leopard 2 tank," Oswald teases.

"Otherwise it could be that after a fire it hangs a centimeter scheps." And with the escape doors, some of which are between the classrooms, it has occasionally resulted in a kind of stepped jump-through hatch so that the statics are not closed due to the fire protection endanger.

In fact, fire is an issue: charred rubbish bins and rubbish bins outside around the school occur again and again.

In addition to the new building, Rector Doris Pfefferkorn can also be happy about another thing: the application for the "Sports primary school" profile at the Ministry of Education was successful thanks to the large range of elective courses from boogie dance to basketball - and with 1000 euros and a budget for an additional lesson in 1st class is rewarded.

A small consolation in view of the teacher shortage looming across Bavaria in the coming 2022/2023 school year.

How good or bad the staffing will be, whether there will have to be cuts in the additional offers, will come up at the end of August.
