The District Court in Tel Aviv this evening (Tuesday) overturned the Likud's inter-jurisdictional decision and disqualified the candidacy in the primaries of his uncle Laniado, a party member who was previously convicted of burglary and assaulting a woman.

In doing so, the court accepted his petition in the matter of the chairman of the party and the head of the opposition Benjamin Netanyahu.

The court's decision was made hours before the start of the primaries and the opening of the finger polls throughout the country, which are expected to open at 09:00 tomorrow morning. Yesterday the Supreme Court of the Likud approved the candidacy Netanyahu petitioned the district today through the Likud's ombudsman.

This is an unusual intervention of the court in the internal proceedings of judicial party institutions.

District Court Judge Einat Ravid rejected the decision of the Likud court on the grounds that the decision is neither reasoned nor coherent.

According to her, the decision lacks a legal and factual basis that explains why it was decided to overturn the decision of the Likud Election Committee, which disqualified Laniado due to hiding part of his criminal past.

He pressured his cronies to run to oust Lenaido.

Laniado was convicted of housebreaking in 2011, but last week it was announced that he hid another offense in his past and that in 2010 he was sent to house arrest for assaulting a woman.

Therefore, the election committee disqualified his candidacy.

The court accepted Laniado's appeal and overturned the decision, arguing that there are legal obstacles in disqualifying a candidate due to a statute-barred offense.

Laniado is considered a close associate of MK David Bitan, and until his disqualification last week he was also considered the leading candidate in the Tel Aviv district, who will be ranked 38th on the list. In recent weeks, Likud chairman Benjamin Netanyahu has invested a lot of effort to get him to step down and influence the contest in the district, fearing that he would Loyal to Bitan and due to his criminal past.

Among other things, Netanyahu pressured his spokesman, Yonatan Urich, to submit a candidacy for the Tel Aviv district slot in order to defeat Lenaido, but Urich withdrew his candidacy this week.

Later, Netanyahu also pressured his associate, the former journalist Boaz Bismut, to run in the Tel Aviv district against Laniado, but Bismut refused and preferred to run on the national list.
