Israel launches new operation against suspected militants in the West Bank

By Abeer Salman, Amir Tal and Kareem El Damanhoury

Israel launched a new operation against suspected Palestinian militants in the West Bank on Tuesday morning, apparently targeting a regional commander, Ibrahim Nabulsi.

There are conflicting reports about the state of Nabulsi.

A statement from Israeli security forces said he had been killed, but Palestinian Health Ministry officials say doctors are still working to save his life at a hospital in the city of Nablus.

The Health Ministry says that at least 32 people were injured (four critically) with live bullets in Nablus as Israeli forces entered the city.

An Israeli statement accused Nabulsi of being behind a series of recent shooting attacks against Israelis in the West Bank.

Death toll from South Korea floods rises to 8

By Gawon Bae

South Korea's Ministry of the Interior and Security says eight people have died, at least seven are missing and nine have been injured in heavy flooding.

Additionally, 391 people from 230 households in the greater Seoul area have been evacuated to school gymnasiums and local community centers.

A total of 741 houses and shops have reported flooding.

According to the Seoul Subway, streets and subway stations were flooded as water rose back up through drains that were unable to handle the strong flow of water.

Service at some subway stations stopped or was temporarily suspended on Monday night.

Several stations are already back in operation and the Seoul Subway is working with the Seoul city government to resume normal operations on Tuesday.

South Korea expects heavy rain in the Gyeonggi metropolitan area and province through Thursday, according to the Korea Meteorological Administration.

Tibet reports first known cases of covid-19 in more than 900 days

By Shawn Deng

Tibet health authorities reported four locally transmitted Covid-19 cases on Monday after the region was virus-free for 920 days.

Health authorities in Tibet's Nagri prefecture said in a statement that four tourists from other regions of Tibet tested positive for COVID-19 while traveling to the prefecture.

All four were from Shigatse, in southern Tibet.

In response to the identification of covid-19 cases, the city of Shigatse issued a statement on Monday that all areas of the city would be subject to "closed administration", adding that public places and entertainment facilities, such as restaurants, cinemas and bars would stop operating until further notice.

According to the statement, the city began mass testing on Monday for all residents.

In response to the discovery of the covid cases, the People's Hospital of the Tibet Autonomous Region in Lhasa announced on Monday that they have suspended their outpatient services.

According to CNN's calculation, Tibet has been free of the covid-19 virus for 920 days since a case was found at the start of the pandemic in January 2020.

Polls open in Kenya for general election

By Bethlehem Feleke

Polling stations opened in Kenya early Tuesday morning for the general election.

As many as 22.1 million registered voters will vote for the African country's fifth president in a hotly contested presidential election.

Voters across the country began lining up at 2 a.m. local time in some places, according to local media.

Polls opened at 6 a.m. Tuesday and will close at 5 p.m.

Presidential candidate and current vice president William Ruto was one of the first voters in his hometown of Sugoi, near Eldoret, in the Rift Valley.

Martha Karua, running mate of presidential candidate Raila Odinga, also cast her vote shortly after the ballots opened in Gichugu.

On Monday night, the Independent Boundary and Electoral Commission said gubernatorial elections in Kakamega and Mombasa counties would be postponed due to a ballot mix-up.

The move raised new questions about trust in the electoral body in charge of the elections, which had previously faced accusations of wrongdoing by the two main presidential candidates.

There are more than 46,000 polling stations across the country.

Voters will also have the opportunity to vote for county governors, members of parliament, county assembly members, senators and a women's representative seat.
