Today (Tuesday), Russia launched an Iranian satellite into space from a base in Kazakhstan, as part of the tightening of cooperation between the two countries subject to Western sanctions.

The "Khyam" satellite, named after the 11th century Persian poet and philosopher Omar Khayyam, was launched on a "Soyuz" rocket from the Baikonar Spaceport, in southern Kazakhstan.

According to the Russian Space Agency, which oversees the base, the satellite successfully entered its orbit.

In Iran, it was reported that the local space agency received the first transmissions from the satellite.

In the West they fear that the West will also be used for military purposes.

The Washington Post reported last week that Washington is concerned about the space cooperation between Russia and Iran, and fears that the satellite will not only help Russia in its war in Ukraine, but will also give Iran "extraordinary capabilities" to track targets in Israel and the Middle East.

Iran rejected these reports, and claims that it will have full and exclusive control over the satellite "from the first moment."

Iran says the satellite is intended for research purposes, including radiation and environmental monitoring for agricultural purposes.

The cooperation between Moscow and Tehran is tightening.

Following the Western sanctions imposed on it in response to the invasion of Ukraine, Russia has been getting closer to Iran in recent months, including American warnings against the transfer of armed drones from Iran to Russia, which were also rejected by both countries. Last month, Russian President Vladimir Putin visited Iran, in his first foray outside the borders of allied countries. the former Soviets since the start of the war in Ukraine on February 24. Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei told Putin that Russia must remain vigilant against "the deception of the West".

Tehran is also under heavy Western sanctions over its nuclear program. It said yesterday that it would review The draft agreement drawn up by the European Union in an attempt to return it and the United States to the nuclear agreement, at the end of the round of nuclear talks in Vienna.
