When it comes to the setbacks of its own armed forces, the Kremlin keeps a low profile.

Information on fatalities, injuries or losses in military equipment does not get out.

The USA has now published estimates for this – they have been supporting Ukraine with intelligence information since the invasion.

According to the US Department of Defense, up to 80,000 Russian soldiers have already been killed or injured.

"The Russians probably suffered 70,000 to 80,000 casualties in less than six months," senior Pentagon official Colin Kahl told reporters in Washington on Monday.

In addition, the Russian army has lost "three or four thousand" armored vehicles.

It is also possible that soon they would no longer have enough rocket supplies for their war.

Moscow's losses are "quite remarkable given that the Russians did not achieve any of the goals stated by (President) Vladimir Putin at the beginning of the war," Kahl continued.

He also said that many Ukrainian soldiers were also killed – but the Pentagon representative did not name a number.

Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24.

Since then, both sides have been fighting fiercely.

Official information about fatalities in their ranks is given neither by Kyiv nor by Moscow.

More billions from the US

Kahl described the war as "the most intense conventional conflict in Europe since the Second World War".

He currently sees the Ukrainians at a clear advantage, especially because they are superior to the Russian armed forces in terms of their morale and willingness to fight, said Kahl.

»There is a lot at stake for them.

They fight for the survival of their country.«

The US government wants to make a further 4.5 billion US dollars (around 4.4 billion euros) available for the state budget of Ukraine, which has been attacked by Russia.

The US Agency for International Development said on Monday that the budget deficit caused by Russia's war of aggression should be alleviated with the money.

The government of Ukraine will receive the funds in tranches, starting with a $3 billion payout in August.

The funds are to be made available to the country via the World Bank.

The additional funding is intended to help the Ukrainian government maintain basic functions for its people, it said.
