At least seven people were killed and nine others were injured as a result of heavy rains that hit the South Korean capital, Seoul, and its surroundings last night.
"At least five people were killed in Seoul and two others in neighboring Gyeonggi Province, while at least nine people were injured and six others are missing," Reuters news agency quoted the Center for Disaster Mitigation and Safety Measures as saying.
Some buildings and shops were inundated and electricity was cut off in Gangnam district, as well as cars, buses and subway stations.
The center raised its crisis alert to the highest level and said, "President Yoon Seok Yeol chaired an emergency response meeting and instructed authorities to focus on preventing casualties and quickly controlling the situation in the flooded areas."
The center expected that heavy rains will continue in the central part of the country until at least tomorrow.
